Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta:

I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years.

I don't make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana.

我不再出席公眾活動(dòng)，因?yàn)槲抑牢椰F(xiàn)在老的像一只鬣蜥。

What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpture, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what's inside you, to make your soul grow.

Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives.

Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her.

Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on.

放學(xué)之后跳著舞回家，洗澡的時(shí)候放聲歌唱，諸如此類的事情。

Make a face in your mashed potatoes.

Pretend you're Count Dracula.

Here's an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don't do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed.

你們今天晚上有個(gè)任務(wù)，如果你們不做的話，我希望洛克伍德女士會(huì)給你們個(gè)不及格：寫一首六行的詩(shī)，關(guān)于什么都行，但一定要押韻。

No fair tennis without a net.

Make it as good as you possibly can. But don't tell anybody what you're doing.

Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash receptacles.

You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem.

你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)你已經(jīng)為你的詩(shī)找到了最好的回報(bào)。

You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what's inside you, and you have made your soul grow.

你已經(jīng)體會(huì)了這種經(jīng)歷，已經(jīng)對(duì)你的靈魂了解了更多，也使它得到了成長(zhǎng)。
