拉爾夫·維克

Ralph Wick was seven years old.

拉爾夫·維克七歲了。

In most things he was a fine boy, but he was too apt to cry.

大多數(shù)情況下他是個(gè)好孩子，但他太喜歡哭鼻子了。

When he could not have what he wanted he would cry for it and say, "I will have it."

當(dāng)他得不到自己想要的東西時(shí)，就會(huì)哭著說(shuō)：“我想要。”

If he was told that it would hurt him, and he could not have it, he would begin to tease and cry.

如果別人告訴他那個(gè)東西會(huì)傷著他，所以他才得不到，他就開(kāi)始又哭又鬧。

One day, he went with his mother into the fields.

一天，他和媽媽走進(jìn)田野。

The sun shone. The grass was cut.

The flowers were in bloom.

花兒正在盛開(kāi)。

Ralph thought he was, for once, a good boy.

拉爾夫覺(jué)得他這次要做個(gè)好孩子。

A smile was on his face. He wished to do as he was told.

微笑掛在他的臉上，他希望按照自己說(shuō)的去做。

He said, "Mother, I will be good now.

他說(shuō)：“媽媽?zhuān)椰F(xiàn)在要做個(gè)好孩子。

I will do as you bid me. Please let me toss this hay."

我要按你吩咐的去做，請(qǐng)讓我去扔干草吧。”

"That I will," said his mother.

“我和你一起扔。”媽媽說(shuō)道。

So they threw the hay, as Ralph wished, and he was very happy.

因此，就像拉爾夫希望的那樣，他們一起扔干草，他也非常高興。

"Now you must be tired," said his mother.

“現(xiàn)在你必須休息一下了。”媽媽說(shuō)，

"Sit down here, and I will get a nice red rose for you."

"I would like to have one," said Ralph.

“我想要一朵。”拉爾夫說(shuō)。

So his mother brought the red rose to him.

于是媽媽給他摘了一朵紅玫瑰。

"Thank you, mother," he said.

“謝謝你，媽媽。”他說(shuō)，

"But you have a white one, also. Please give me that."

“但你還有一朵白的。請(qǐng)把那個(gè)也給我。”

"No, my dear," said his mother.

“不，親愛(ài)的。”媽媽說(shuō)，

"See how many thorns it has on its stem. You must not touch it.

“看看它的莖上有多少刺，一定不要碰它們。

If you should try to pluck a rose like this, you would be sure to hurt your hand."

如果你打算像這樣摘一朵玫瑰，肯定會(huì)弄破你的手。”

When Ralph found that he could not have the white rose, he began to scream, and snatched it.

當(dāng)拉爾夫發(fā)現(xiàn)他得不到那朵白玫瑰時(shí)，便開(kāi)始大吵大鬧，之后一把奪了過(guò)去。

But he was soon very sorry. The thorns tore his hand.

但他很快就覺(jué)得難過(guò)。花上的刺弄破了他的手，

It was so sore he could not use it for some time.

疼得他很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間不能再用了。

Ralph did not soon forget this.

拉爾夫沒(méi)有很快把這件事忘掉。

When he wanted what he should not have, his mother would point to his sore hand.

當(dāng)他想得到自己不該得到的東西時(shí)，媽媽就會(huì)指一指他受傷的手。

He at last learned to do as he was told.

最后，他開(kāi)始學(xué)會(huì)按照自己說(shuō)過(guò)的話(huà)去做了。
