"Mamma," said Susie Dean, one summer's morning, "may I go to the woods, and pick berries?"

“媽媽，”一個(gè)夏日的早晨，蘇茜.迪恩說(shuō)，“我可不可以到樹(shù)林里去采漿果？”

"Yes," replied Mrs. Dean, "but you must take Rover with you."

“可以，”迪恩太太回答，“但是你必須帶著羅孚一起去。”

Susie brought her little basket, and her mother put up a nice lunch for her.

蘇茜帶上她的小籃子，媽媽為她準(zhǔn)備了美味的午餐。

She tied down the cover, and fastened a tin cup to it.

她把蓋子綁緊，再在上面系上一個(gè)杯子。

The little girl called Rover—a great New found land dog—and gave him a tin pail to carry.

小女孩呼喚羅孚——一條很棒的紐芬蘭犬——再給它一個(gè)錫桶叼著。

"If I bring it home full, mamma," she said, "won't you make some berry cakes for tea?"

“要是我裝滿這個(gè)桶帶回家來(lái)，媽媽，”她說(shuō)，“你會(huì)不會(huì)做一些漿果蛋糕在喝茶的時(shí)候吃呢？”

Away she tripped, singing as she went down the lane and across the pasture.

她輕快地走了出去，唱著歌兒，順著小路，穿過(guò)了牧場(chǎng)。

When she got to the woods, she put her dinner basket down beside a tree, and began to pick berries.

到了樹(shù)林里，她把裝著午餐的籃子放在一棵樹(shù)下，開(kāi)始采起漿果來(lái)。

Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying far from Susie.

羅孚跑來(lái)跑去，不時(shí)追趕松鼠或野兔，但絕對(duì)不會(huì)離開(kāi)蘇茜太遠(yuǎn)。

The tin pail was not a very small one.

錫桶并不小。

By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry, and thought she would eat her lunch.

到漿果裝滿了桶的三分之二的時(shí)候，蘇絲開(kāi)始覺(jué)得餓了，想起來(lái)該吃午飯了。

Rover came and took his place at her side as soon as she began to eat.

蘇茜開(kāi)始吃飯時(shí)，羅孚馬上跑過(guò)來(lái)，在她身邊找個(gè)位置蹲好。

Did she not give him some of the lunch?

不給它分一點(diǎn)兒?jiǎn)幔?/p>

No, she was in a selfish mood, and did no such thing.

不，蘇絲有些自私的情緒，沒(méi)有給羅孚食物。

"There, Rover, run away! there's a good dog," she said;

“羅孚，那邊，快走開(kāi)！乖。”她說(shuō)。

but Rover staid near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes.

可是羅孚在她身邊一動(dòng)也不動(dòng)，清澈的褐色眼睛默默地注視著她。

The meat he wanted so much, was soon eaten up; and all he got of the nice dinner, was a small crust of gingerbread that Susie threw away.

它多想要那塊肉啊，可是很快就被吃掉了；這頓美味的午餐它唯一得到的，就是蘇茜扔掉的一小塊姜餅皮。

After dinner, Susie played a while by the brook.

吃完以后，蘇茜在小河邊玩了一會(huì)兒。

She threw sticks into the water, and Rover swam in and brought them back.

她把棍子扔到水里，羅孚游出去把它叼回來(lái)。

Then she began to pick berries again.

之后她又開(kāi)始采漿果了。
