A heritage, it seems to me,

A king might wish to hold in fee.

What doth the poor man's son inherit?

窮人子弟，繼承什么？

A patience learned of being poor,

安于貧困憂患，面容堅(jiān)毅，

Courage, if sorrow come, to bear it,

應(yīng)對(duì)各種變故，寵辱不驚，

A fellow-feeling that is sure

身處逆境，心系他人冷暖，

To make the outcast bless his door;

心地善良，援手弱勢(shì)群體；

A heritage, it seems to me,

O rich man's son! there is a toil

Large charity doth never soil,

But only whiten soft, white hands,—

扎實(shí)低調(diào)地行事做人，

This is the best crop from thy lands;

最好收獲，來(lái)自庇陰的土地。

A heritage, it seems to me,

Worth being rich to hold in fee.

O poor man's son! scorn not thy state;
