1. 動名詞作定語與所修飾的名詞是使用關系。

No one is allowed to speak aloud in the reading room . （=　the room for reading）.

不許任何人在閱覽室里大聲說話。

That is the shop dealing in walking sticks . （=　the sticks for walking）.

那就是賣拐杖的商店。

2. 動名詞本身不能作狀語，但放在介詞后構成介詞短語作狀語表示時間、原因、目的、方式、讓步等，常見的介詞有：on, with, after, by, upon, before, at, without, for, besides, against, about, in, from等。

After getting up in the morning, he went out for a walk.

早上起床之后他出去散步了。

With you standing here with me, I feel very pleased.

有你站在我身邊，我覺得很高興。

We got to know each other by talking in the cinema last year.

我們是去年通過在電影院里談話相識的。

On coming into the house, he started to sing aloud.

一進房子他就大聲唱了起來。

At hearing the news , he stood there, surprised.
