Not another word.

Good morning, everyone. This is the morning programme on KeKe Net Radio. I’m Juliet.

We have a short sentence which is often said by parents and can mean “Stop talking right now or you’ll be punished.” What’s it? Don’t worry about it , let’s listen to a simple situational dialogue and I’m sure you can find it.

Mike : Mom, Tommy pushed me. Jane : You children, stop fighting. Not another word.

Now have you spotted it? It is “Not another word.” What’s more , if we want to ask a person to stop talking right now or he’ll be punished, how should we put it? Okay , easy, we just put a preposition “from” or an adverbial phrase “out of ” after “word”, then it comes that “Not another word from (out of ) you. ”.

In addition, we should pay attention to the situation in which it’s often used. It is often said by a patent angrily when his children are quarrelling .

So much for the explanations to this conversational expression.

And now I’m wondering if you’ve got it, so let’s put it into practice. Please translate the following scripts from hit American films.

Think them over and to answer are gonna be uncovered.

1. Not a word outta you. You don’t have anything to be sorry about?

Here, outta. o-u-t-t-a is the written form in American slangs which equals to “out of ”.

2. Enough! Stop! Not a word from any of you.

We have a more difficult practice. Would you like to challenge it?Please think hard to make a situational dialogue with the above two conversational sentences from American films. The suggestive dialogue will be given later.

Sister: You should have hit the books when you were at school and you aren’t between jobs. So it’s beneath to complaint. Brother: Shut the fuck up. You don’t have anything to be sorry about?

Sister: Be nice, brother.

Mom: Enough! Stop! Not another word from any of you. You guys cannot just keep it down for a while?

Here there are two American slangs. The first one is “hit the books” which means “to study hard”. The second one is “between jobs” which means “to be out of one’s job.

Except for those, here are three key sentences. They are as follows:

1. Shut the fuck up!

We’ve learnt it which means to shut you mouth and stop talking that .

2. It’s beneath your complaint.

It means there’s nothing to complain about. You ask for it.

3. Just keep it down. It means “to quiet down.”

so much for today's programme. Thanking for your listening . See you next time.
