14　below和under

1　below 可以用作副詞和介詞。

（1）作副詞用時(shí)，below 表示“在下面，向下”。副詞below 可以修飾動(dòng)詞，可以作表語，還可以作定語，修飾名詞，但要放在名詞的后面。

The flower garden lies below . 花園在下面。（修飾動(dòng)詞 ）

The office is below . 辦公室在下面。（作表語 ）

From here we can see the whole city below . 從這里我們可以看見下面整座城市。（作定語，后置 ）

Please do the exercises below . 請(qǐng)做下面的練習(xí)。（作定語，后置 ）

（2）作介詞用時(shí)，below 表示“在……以下，在……之下”，通常表示位置，也可表示數(shù)量、等級(jí)、能力等。

Please write your name below the line. 請(qǐng)把你的名字寫在這條線的下面。（表示位置 ）

They passed below the bridge. 他們?cè)跇虻南旅嫱ㄟ^。（表示位置 ）

Children below ten should not see this film. 10歲以下的兒童不應(yīng)看這部電影。（表示數(shù)量 ）

He is below her in ability. 在能力方面，他不如她。（表示能力 ）

His position in the firm was below his brother. 他在公司的職位低于他弟弟。（表示等級(jí) ）

提示

from below意為“從下面”，反義詞是from above（從上面）。

Someone is calling you from below . 有人在下面叫你。

2　under 是介詞，表示“在……下面，低于，在……進(jìn)行中”，表示位置、狀況、年齡、價(jià)格等。under 引導(dǎo)的短語可以修飾動(dòng)詞作狀語，也可以作表語或定語。

He is standing under a tree. 他正站在一棵樹下。（作狀語 ）

He sold the bike under 100 yuan . 他以低于100元的價(jià)格把自行車賣了。（作狀語 ）

These books are for children under ten years of age. 這些書適合10歲以下的兒童閱讀。（作定語 ）

The plan is still under discussion. 這項(xiàng)計(jì)劃仍在討論之中。（作表語 ）

提示

漢語中的“在……下”并不都能用under，比如：“在陽光下，在月光下，在樹蔭下，在燈光下”就要用in。

She laid her clothes in the sun . 她把衣服在陽光下曬曬。

They are sitting in the moonlight . 他們?cè)谠鹿庀伦?/p>

Some children are playing in the shade . 一些兒童在樹蔭下玩耍。

She is doing her homework in the lamplight . 她在燈下做作業(yè)。

3　below 和under 的區(qū)別：below 表示一般的低于或在某物的下面，物體間不接觸，不一定是在垂直的下面，反義詞是above; under 表示在垂直的下方，物體間可以相互接觸，也可以不接觸，強(qiáng)調(diào)一種直接的垂直上下關(guān)系，反義詞是over 。

比較

From the hill, we can see a river below us. 從這座小山上，我們能看見下面的一條河。

There is a cat under the chair. 椅子底下有一只貓。

提示

表示數(shù)量、重量、年齡、物價(jià)等時(shí)，below和under?？蓳Q用。

The train was running under/below 100 miles per hour. 火車以每小時(shí)不到100英里的速度行駛。
