英文原文

Today, grab your poles and bait. We are going fishing.

今天,拿起你的釣竿和魚餌。我們要去釣魚了。

Fishing is a popular outdoor activity you can do in lots of different places. You can go ice fishing, deep sea fishing, or fly fishing in a river, to name a few examples. Whatever type of fishing you do, the equipment is similar. In addition to a fishing pole, you will need a fishing hook, a fishing line, and sometimes a sinker.

釣魚是一項可以在許多不同地方進行的受歡迎的戶外活動。你可以去冰釣、深海釣魚,或者在河里飛釣,這些都是例子。無論你進行哪種類型的釣魚,所需的設(shè)備都相似。除了釣竿,你還需要魚鉤、魚線和有時需要的鉛墜。

But in conversation, we don't use the expression "hook, line, and sinker" when we are talking about catching a fish. We use it to describe fooling someone who is easy to fool; in other words, they are gullible. When people believe a story hook, line, and sinker, they accept it completely, even though it is a big fat lie. Note that the expression usually begins with the verbs "by" or "fall." For example, "He fell for my excuse hook, line, and sinker," or "She bought my story hook, line, and sinker."

But what about people who are not so gullible? When something sounds even the slightest bit fishy, they do not believe it. The word "fishy" means likely untrue. In other words, something that sounds fishy sounds like a lie. For this one, we also say "smells fishy." A phrase I think is even better.

但那些不那么容易上當(dāng)?shù)娜嗽趺礃幽???dāng)某件事聽起來有一點點可疑時,他們就不會相信。單詞“fishy”意為可能不真實。換句話說,聽起來可疑的事情聽起來就像謊言。對于這一點,我們也說“聞起來有魚腥味”。我認為這個說法甚至更好。

If you tell someone a fish story, you are telling them a story that is so strange or surprising that it seems very unlikely to be true. It is an exaggeration. We tell others fish stories when we want to brag or show off. This expression comes from the fact that people who fish often say their catch is bigger than it really was. But fish stories don't have to be about fish. We can exaggerate about anything.

如果你告訴某人一個離奇的故事,你是在告訴他們一個如此奇怪或令人驚訝的故事,以至于它似乎非常不可能是真的。這是一種夸張。當(dāng)我們想要炫耀或炫耀時,我們會告訴別人離奇的故事。這個表達源于這樣一個事實:經(jīng)常釣魚的人會說他們釣到的魚比實際的大。但是離奇的故事不一定是關(guān)于魚的。我們可以對任何事情進行夸張。

Take my friend for example. He loves to tell people about the time he was attacked by a swarm of bees. Each time he tells the story, the amount of bees and bee stings increase. At last count, it was 1 million bees and thousands of stings. It's his very own fish story.

以我的朋友為例。他喜歡告訴別人他被一群蜜蜂攻擊的事情。每次他講這個故事時,蜜蜂的數(shù)量和被蜇的次數(shù)都會增加。據(jù)他最后統(tǒng)計,那是有100萬只蜜蜂和數(shù)千次蜇傷。這是他自己編造的離奇故事。

Now, back to real fishing for a minute. Let's say you are planning a long, complicated fishing tour. This is not just a one or two day trip. It is a fishing expedition. You are not sure what you will catch, but you are going to spend a lot of time and effort trying to catch something.

現(xiàn)在,讓我們暫時回到真正的釣魚上來。假設(shè)你正在計劃一次漫長而復(fù)雜的釣魚之旅。這不是一兩天就能完成的旅行。這是一次釣魚探險。你不確定能釣到什么,但你會花很多時間和精力去嘗試釣到一些東西。

In conversation, a fishing expedition is very similar. A fishing expedition is a general search. It does not stick to a stated goal, but hopes to uncover useful evidence or information. For example, if a police detective is on a fishing expedition, she may ask all the people who were near a crime in their neighborhood. She does not know if any of them are guilty or if they know anything, but she hopes one of them will give evidence about the crime.

在對話中,釣魚探險與這非常相似。釣魚探險是一種一般性的搜索。它不局限于一個明確的目標,而是希望發(fā)現(xiàn)有用的證據(jù)或信息。例如,如果一名警察偵探正在進行釣魚探險,她可能會詢問鄰居中所有在犯罪現(xiàn)場附近的人。她不知道他們中是否有任何人有罪或是否知道任何事情,但她希望其中一個人能提供有關(guān)犯罪的證據(jù)。

Now, you can fish for many other things too. A writer can fish around for a good story idea. She may ask many people lots of questions about their lives before finding something interesting to write about. And let's say your co-worker asks you a lot of questions about your personal life. He does not have a clear reason why. He just seems to be fishing around for information. It makes you more than a little uncomfortable, and it should. That's the thing with this expression.

現(xiàn)在,你也可以用釣魚來比喻許多其他事情。一位作家可以四處尋找一個好的故事點子。她可能會問很多人關(guān)于他們生活的問題,直到找到一些有趣的東西來寫。比如說,你的同事向你詢問了很多關(guān)于你個人生活的問題。他沒有明確的原因。他似乎只是在四處打聽信息。這讓你感到非常不舒服,也確實應(yīng)該如此。這就是這個表達的含義。
