王健林：迪士尼不該來中國

Wang Jianlin has taken a shot at Disney as the Chinese billionaire’s Dalian Wanda Group prepares to open a theme park in a direct challenge to Walt Disney's forthcoming Shanghai resort.

王健林日前向迪士尼喊話。這位大連萬達(dá)(Wanda)集團(tuán)的中國億萬富翁計劃開設(shè)一個主題公園，直接挑戰(zhàn)迪士尼公司(Walt Disney)即將投入運(yùn)營的上海度假勝地。

"Disney really shouldn't have entered the mainland,” Mr Wang said on China Central Television on Sunday. “We will make Disney's China venture unprofitable in the next 10 to 20 years," he said, as he unveiled ambitions to surpass Disney as the world's largest tourism enterprise by 2020.

“迪士尼實(shí)在不該來大陸，”王建林周日在中國央視上表示：“我們(萬達(dá))會讓迪士尼中國在未來10到20年都無法盈利。” 他透露了到2020年超越迪士尼成為世界最大旅游企業(yè)的雄心。

Disney's Shanghai office said on Tuesday that Mr Wang’s comments “were not worthy of a response”.

迪士尼上海辦事處周二表示，王健林的言論“不值得回應(yīng)”。

The group also aims to open "two or three" Wanda City leisure resorts outside of China by the end of this year, investing "between Rmb20 ($3.1bn) and Rmb30bn ($4.6bn) in each", it said on Tuesday. It is also looking for a Wanda City site near London, but gave no timeline. “The project has significance for us — London attracts tourists from around the world," it said.

Wanda is already partnering with France’s Immochan to develop a €3bn leisure project on the outskirts of Paris.

The company has been on an overseas spending spree during the past several years, including the $2.6bn purchase of AMC Entertainment in 2012, a $300m deal for the UK luxury yacht builder Sunseeker and a 20 per cent stake in Spanish football club Atlético Madrid worth €45m.

In China, Disney and Wanda are vying for dominance of a domestic tourism industry set to expand because of growing ranks of middle-class consumers, new high-speed rail lines, a planned increase in national holidays and government support to expand the sector into a pillar of its new service-oriented economy.

In 2015 Wanda opened an Rmb7bn movie-themed circus show in Wuhan, the capital of the central province of Hubei, signalling a more aggressive push into the leisure sector.

On Saturday Wanda will open its first Wanda City in the south-eastern city of Nanchang, on which it has spent Rmb21bn. Disney is slated to open its first mainland China resort three weeks later, in Shanghai, built at a cost of $5.5bn. Mr. Wang criticised Shanghai Disneyland for the cost, saying it would result in higher ticket prices.

"One tiger is no match for a pack of wolves," said Mr Wang, who is China’s richest man with a fortune estimated at $28.7bn and who was in March elevated to 18th on Forbes’s global billionaires list.

"Shanghai has one Disney, while Wanda, across the nation, will open 15 to 20," he said.

While Disney is preparing work visas for its foreign princesses, Wanda is keen to stress its domestic credentials “Disneyland is fully built on American culture," it said. “We place importance on local culture.”
