Man on trial in Dubai for blackmailing ex-fiancee on WhatsApp

A man has gone on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance for allegedly
extorting cash from his ex-fiancee and blackmailing her.
一名男子在迪拜初審法院受審,據(jù)稱他向前未婚妻勒索錢財(cái)并脅迫她。
Court documents show that the 34-year-old Emirati man started blackmailing
his ex-fiancee since 2016 via Snapchat and WhatsApp when she got engaged to
another man. He coerced her into paying him Dh20,000 after threatening to
circulate her private photos and disgrace her within her family.
法庭文件顯示,這名34歲的阿聯(lián)酋男子從2016年開始通過Snapchat和WhatsApp勒索他的前未婚妻,當(dāng)時(shí)她與另一名男子訂婚了。他威脅要傳播她的私人照片,并讓她在家庭中蒙羞,然后強(qiáng)迫她付給他2萬迪拉姆。
He also verbally abused her in WhatsApp messages.

Public prosecution referred him to trial on charges, including issuing
threats, blackmail, extortion and insult.

A complaint was lodged in December last year at Al Qusais police station.

The complainant, a 25-year-old Emirati, said that the defendant sent her
messages that read: 'leave your fianc or I would circulate your photos'.

"In 2015, he proposed to me and we got engaged. But we cancelled the
engagement later. However, we kept contact via phone calls."

She told the prosecutor that when she got engaged to another man, the accused
asked her to break up with her new fianc and get back to him. "I refused to do
so. I then began receiving messages with threats from foreign numbers.

"I even asked the accused for advice to see who was sending those messages as
he is kind of familiar with such technical stuff."

She recounted that it was like that until she found out that he (the
defendant) was the sender of those messages. She also claimed that he called her
names in WhatsApp messages.

The woman added that the accused made her pay him Dh20,000 for not
circulating her photos.

During police interrogation and public prosecution investigation, the
defendant admitted to the charges.

The case file includes copies of the relevant conversations between the
two.

The trial has been adjourned to February 18.
