Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati
On January 6, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi Jinping said that China and Kiribati resumed diplomatic relations last September on the basis of the One China principle, opening a new chapter for the development of bilateral relations. Since then, the two sides have carried out robust exchanges and cooperation in various areas and at all levels with quite a few early-harvest outcomes.
Xi Jinping emphasized that the two sides need to deepen political mutual trust. China sticks to the path of peaceful development, and does not seek hegemony nor attempt to interfere in other countries internal affairs. As the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, the two countries should also expand practical cooperation by seeking the synergy of the Belt and Road Initiative with Kiribatis 20-year vision development plan.
Taneti Maamau confirmed that the Kiribati side made the important decision to restore diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China based on trust and confidence in China. He also added that Kiribati will firmly adhere to the One China policy, respect Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity, and support Chinas “one country, two systems” policy, and its realization of the great cause of reunification. Kiribati looks forward to enhancing cooperation with China.
Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith of Laos
President Xi Jinping met with Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 6, 2020.
Xi Jinping pointed out that as good neighbors, friends, and partners, China and Laos enjoy a shared future.
Xi Jinping stressed that since next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Laos, China is willing to work with the Lao side to promote the building of a community with a shared future between the two countries, advance the alignment of development strategies, and accelerate the construction of the China-Laos Economic Corridor. It will also promote major cooperation projects and propel peopleto-people and cultural exchanges as well as strengthen coordination and collaboration in international and regional affairs.
Thongloun Sisoulith said that Chinas experience in upholding and improving socialism with Chinese characteristics and modernizing its governance system and capacity is worthy of learning by Laos. It also encourages Laos to unswervingly follow the path of socialism. The Lao side will actively work for the completion of important Belt and Road projects such as the Laos-China railway as scheduled.
Li Keqiang Attends the Eighth Trilateral Summit Meeting among China, ROK and Japan
On December 24, 2019, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK), and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan attended the eighth Trilateral Summit Meeting in Chengdu, exchanging views on trilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues.
Li Keqiang indicated that over the past 20 years, the trilateral practical cooperation has continued to grow in breadth and depth. Despite facing twists and turns, there is commitment from the three countries to achieving win-win results through cooperation and tackling differences through dialogue.
Li Keqiang made the following suggestions on deepening cooperation among the three countries: solidifying mutual trust to uphold the larger interest of cooperation; enhancing overall planning to set the direction for future cooperation; ac- celerating free trade agreement negotiations to boost regional economic integration; boosting innovation cooperation to cultivate new growth areas; increasing people-to-people exchanges to forge a closer bond of friendship; and carrying out cooperation in environmental protection to advance sustainable development.
Moon Jae-in said that the three sides should continuously expand common interests, actively carry out cooperation in areas including climate change, environment, health, and aging population, focus on promoting cooperation in scientific and technological innovation, intensify the protection of intellectual property, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and consolidate the foundation of future-oriented cooperation.
Shinzo Abe said that standing at a new starting point, the three sides should foster “triple win” relations. The three countries should take the opportunities of successively hosting the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to promote exchanges and cooperation in such areas as sports, tourism, and culture.
