《回首當(dāng)年》（The Way We Were）根據(jù)阿琴．勞倫茨的小說(shuō)改編，是好萊塢出品的愛(ài)情片中少數(shù)具有濃厚政治意味的作品，也是當(dāng)時(shí)具有知識(shí)分子味道影片中的代表作。背景為美國(guó)50年代美蘇冷戰(zhàn)時(shí)期，劇情描寫芭芭拉．史翠珊 （Barbra Streisand）和羅伯特．雷德福（Robert Redford）兩位男女主人公，一個(gè)是在校擔(dān)任青年政黨聯(lián)盟主席，另一個(gè)是熱衷運(yùn)動(dòng)和寫作的才子，他們?cè)诖髮W(xué)校園相識(shí)，而到相知相愛(ài)，最后卻因?yàn)楸舜碎g個(gè)性和政治立場(chǎng)的差異而分手。歷經(jīng)多年后兩人再次重逢，回首往事，不勝感慨。悉尼．波拉克（Sydney Pollack）在執(zhí)導(dǎo)該片時(shí)，著重提升影片的思想性，巧妙地把時(shí)代氣氛與個(gè)人沖突加以揉合，欣賞起來(lái)也頗有回腸蕩氣之感。
