President Donald Trump condemned white supremacist groups by name for the first time on Monday, 48 hours after a white supremacist protest in Virginia turned violent shocking the nation.

美國(guó)總統(tǒng)唐納德•特朗普(Donald Trump)周一首次點(diǎn)名譴責(zé)白人至上主義者。48小時(shí)前,弗吉尼亞州爆發(fā)的白人至上主義者抗議演變?yōu)橐粓?chǎng)震撼全美的暴力事件。

Mr Trump had been strongly criticised by civil rights groups, business leaders and fellow Republicans for failing to denounce by name the Ku Klux Klan and other far-right groups behind Saturday’s protests.

此前特朗普受到了民權(quán)組織、商業(yè)領(lǐng)袖和共和黨人士的強(qiáng)烈批評(píng),稱其未能明確譴責(zé)上周六抗議背后的三K黨(Ku Klux Klan)和其他極右翼團(tuán)體。

“We must unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry and violence,” Mr Trump said in a hastily arranged TV appearance at the White House. “We must unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry and violence. Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminal and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

While Vice-President Mike Pence, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Mr Trump’s daughter Ivanka, a White House adviser, had all condemned the white nationalist groups who had organised the protests, Mr Trump instead spoke out against the “many sides” who were to blame for the violence.

Mr Trump began his brief remarks on Monday by speaking about trade and the economy. He did not take questions from reporters.

Earlier in the day US business leaders joined in the criticism of the president’s reluctance to denounce the violence perpetrated by white nationalist extremists in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday. The protesters were objecting to the removal of a statue dedicated Robert E Lee, the leading confederate general in the American Civil War.

On Monday, Merck chief executive Ken Frazier issued a statement on Twitter saying he had decided to resign from Donald Trump’s American Manufacturing Council “as a matter of personal conscience”. Other corporate leaders, including Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, criticised the president’s reluctance to denounce members of the far-right, many of whom count themselves among Mr Trump’s supporters.

Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, said the “terror of white supremacy and racist violence” is “an affront to America. We must all stand against it.”
