A rescue effort is underway after a section of a major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore. A cargo ship earlier collided into one of the pillars of the structure. Two people have been rescued so far, with one in serious condition.

The city's fire department has called it a mass casualty event, with search operations looking for seven individuals, but numbers are still not confirmed as authorities continue to assess the situation. Officials early said there could be as many as 20 people in the water.
