JULIA:Sorry I'm late,Tom.
T:It's all right,Rita.Where have you been?
J:At the police station.
T:Where?!
J:At the police station.
I've lost my briefcase.Or perhaps someone's taken it.I don't know.
T:Oh,no.What happened?Sit down. Was there anything important in it?
J:Important! My cheque book, all the papers I need for work,my appointment book...
T:Oh,that's terrible. But how did you lose your briefcase?
J:Well,as you know,I was with a client all morning and we had lunch together.
After I had lunch,I went shopping. And when I wanted to buy something,
I couldn't find my cheque book.
Then I remembered that it was in my briefcase.
And my briefcase was in my car.
T:So you went back to your car.
J:I went back to my car.No briefcase.
T:And then you went to the police?
J:Not immediately. Before I went to the police station,
I called the client's office.
No luck. They said the briefcase wasn't there.
T:Excuse me.Yes?Yes,there is.Julia Marsh.Really?I'll tell her.
It was very kind of you to call.Bye.
That was the manager of the Europa restaurant.
Just after lunch today he found a black leather briefcase under a table.
When he opened the case,he found a lot of papers.
He said they had the name MAP on the them.
And he found a cheque book with the name Marsh on it.J Marsh.J for Julia?
J:Ah.

Development
Exercise 4
We got on Highway 101 with our lights and sirens going.
Once we crossed the Bay Bridge and were heading towards Berkeley,
I looked up and I could see the flames on the ridges and I was,I was, shocked.
When we turned the corner
we saw a thirty-foot jet of gas shoot out at us-a broken gas line.
Exercise 5
While we were on Broadway Terrace,we were asked to fight an attic fire in one of the homes.
After we made entry into the house we climbed up a narrow staircase
into a small child's room and I only had a second to look around me
before the room filled with smoke and it was too hot to stand up.
So we backed out down the staircase.
And as we were coming down the stairs,
I saw photographs hanging on the wall and I felt at that point
that these people were going to lose their home and I thought that if
I could take the pictures they would at least have something.
So I snatched them off the wall and I grabbed a towel and I wrapped them in a towel,
and I hunched over them so that they wouldn't get wet,
and I put them down in a neighbour's yard.
It was unbelievable to see so much burning at once and,
um,it was like someone had dropped a bomb on Oakland.

She has been here of five years and I've enjoyed working
with her very much. But she had decided to leave.
I haven't tried to persuade her to stay
because I know she wants to try something new.Julia, come here, please.
This is from all the staff and myself.
It comes with our thanks and our best wishes for the future.
ULIA:Thank you everybody.Thank you very much.
TOM:Now,here's to Julia, and her new life.
ALL:To Julia!

ALL:...Julia!
Development
4.Listen to Norman Stevens,
a registrar at Kensington and Chelsea Register Officer in London.
Answer the questions in your student's book.
I have been a registrar for twenty-three years.
I'm not sure exactly how many couples I've married in those years,
but it's probably around ten thousand.
The most weddings I've ever done in one day was actually twenty-two.
I have never actually forgotten the words completely,
but I have sometimes started the first declaration a second time,
or started the second declaration first.
Even though I personally have married about ten thousand couples,
what I have to remind myself all the time is that for them
it's their first time, and for them it's a very special day.
Unit 15 In the future
Predictions
3.Listen to an interview with a young woman.
She is making predictions about her future.
Complete the sentences in your student's book.
INTERVIEWER:Excuse me.I'm doing a survey.Can I ask you a few questions?
GIRL:OK.What do you want to know?
I:Well, first of all...how old are you?
G:Sixteen.Sixteen and a half.
I:Right. When you leave school, will you get a job,do you think?
G:Probably not.There aren't many jobs around,are there?
I:OK.Do you think you'll get your own home, away from your parents?
G:Oh,yes,I'm sure I will,in the next few years.
I'll find the money somehow and move in with friends.
I:Will you think about moving away from the area?
Somewhere where there are more jobs?
G:Yes,it's possible.
I:What about marriage and children?
Do you think you'll get married in the next five years, say?
G:Probably,but I certainly don't want children yet.I'm too young.
I:OK.One more question.Would you like to travel?
G:I'd like to,but I don't think I will.I can't speak foreign languages,
and anyway, you certainly need money for that.Maybe later.
I:Thanks very much.
Problem solving
1.Listen and read.Julia is talking to her friend Anna on the telephone.
Answer the questions in your student's book.
JULIA:Anna,I still don't know what to do about my future.I need your help.
ANNA:OK.Well, why don't you tell me about the different options?
Then we can talk about them.
JULIA:Yes,right.Well,it's not too late to change my mind and stay at MAP.
If I stay,I won't have to look for another job.
I'll also be able to work with people that I like.
(Aha)The second possibility is to go to Germany.
Karl thinks that I'll be able to find a job there.(Oh)
If I go to Germany.I'll earn more money. On the other hand.I'll miss my friends.
ANNA:OK.Have you got any other options?
6.Stress and intonation.Listen.
Does the speaker's voice go up or down at the end of each clause?
1.If she goes to Germany, she'll miss her friends.
2.She'll miss her friends if she goes to Germany.
3.If she stays at MAP,she'll have to leave London.
4.She'll have to leave London if she stays at MAP.
9.Listen to a conversation between Julia and James.Answer the questions in your student's book.
JULIA:Well,this is it.
JAMES:This is it.
JU:My last day at MAP Advertising.
JA:What are you going to do?Have you decided yet?
JU:Not really.I think I'll go to Germany - and look for a job there.
JA:You don't sound very happy,Julia.
JU:I know. It's just that, well,I hope I'm doing the right thing.
JA:Oh,you'll be OK.
JU:I hope so.
JA:You can always stay at MAP.It's not too late.
JU:No,I'm not going to do that. What about you,James?
Where will you be five years from now?
JA:What a question!I'll be married and I'll have two children.
JU:Really?
JA:Of course not.I don't know where I'll be five years from now.
I hope I'll still be in advertising.I like it.Will you get married,Julia?
JU:Perhaps.If I meet the right man,I'll get married.But I don't know.
Development
3&4.Listen.And answer the questions in your student's book.
And now over to Terry Price for the weather forecast.
Well,a mixed picture over the next few days.
Today in Britain, very wet and windy-in northern Europe.
You can see from the satellite picture that the highest temperatures,
as they so often are,are in the southern parts of Europe,
where it's also quite dry, particularly the eastern parts of the Mediterranean.
The forecast suggests that it's going to be quite cold
over northwestern parts of Europe for the rest of the day,
even some snow on the Scandinavian mountains.
So that's today's chart,
with showery conditions in many parts of northern Europe
but the best of the sunshine in the south
and throughout the Mediterranean and in the Canary Isles as well.
And pretty good but cool in the eastern parts of Europe too.
Now let's look at tomorrow's chart.
Very much the same in the south except that the rain is starting to
push down into the northern parts of the Mediterranean there.
Elsewhere, staying fine in eastern Europe and fine in central
and eastern parts of the Mediterranean as well.
But still wet and windy in many northwestern parts of Europe,
including southern parts of Scandinavian, and a bit cool too.
