金球獎1994年之前評選對象限定為擁有歐洲國籍的球員，首位獲獎球員是斯坦利·馬休斯;1995年開始評選對象放寬為效力歐洲足協(xié)成員國所屬的足球俱樂部的球員;2007年開始評選范圍擴展為全球所有職業(yè)足球運動員，故2007年前的金球獎獲得者也常被稱為歐洲足球先生(EuropeanFootballer of the Year);2010年與原國際足聯(lián)世界足球先生合并為國際足球聯(lián)合會金球獎(FIFABallon d'Or)，合并前最后一位獲獎球員是里奧·梅西。

Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women's player of the year, whileColombia's James Rodriguez won goal of the year.

Germany's World Cup winner Joachim Low won men's coach of the year.

Wolfsburg boss Ralf Kellermann was named women's football coach of the year after a successfuldefence of the Champions League.

The three candidates for the Ballon d'Or were all picked in the team of the year, along withdefenders Philipp Lahm, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, midfielders Andres Iniesta, ToniKroos and Angel Di Maria and forward Arjen Robben.
