Inside the Captain’s quarters, a chubby hand moved a toy starship toward a holo-graphic globe. “Prepare for landing,” the Captain said, inching the small model of the Axiom closer to the globe.
“We’re here, everybody!” he announced to his pretend passengers. He walked his fingers over the globe and said in a high voice, “Yay, Captain! It’s so beautiful!”
“No, it’s nothing,” he said, lowering his voice again. “I was pleased to do it. It’s all about you people!”
A strange rattling interrupted his make-believe landing. The Captain turned away from the globe to see EVE rising from the trash chute.
EVE hovered in front of him, and to his complete surprise, she opened her panel doors.
“The plant!” the Captain exclaimed. “How did you ever find it?”
EVE floated toward him and saluted. She presented him with the plant. He gazed at it in absolute wonder. “We can go home now!” he gasped. He looked at the holo-graphic globe. “What’s it like now?” he asked EVE anxiously. “No, no, don’t tell me,” he said as he activated her memory chip, causing images from her mission to Earth to flash onto his screen.
The Captain squinted as the screen jumped from one scene to another. He watched EVE’s journey through her eyes—all the things she had seen and recorded during her time on Earth.
But soon the Captain’s happy anticipation evaporated. His brow furrowed as he saw images of Earth’s terrible condition. These pictures were nothing like the ones he’d seen earlier on his computer. He began to worry. Earth was clearly too polluted. He couldn’t guide his ship home to that mess. People would not be able to live there.
He looked down at the plant. A single leaf dropped. But wait—the Captain knew what to do. He had learned this from the computer. He would water the plant.
And as he turned to do so, he heard WALL · E’s favorite song playing. EVE had recorded Hello, Dolly! when WALL · E had shown the video to her back on Earth.
“Hey, I remember that song!” the Captain said. And somehow it inspired him.
He looked at the plant. If this little guy could grow on Earth, then his passengers could grow and thrive there, too. By golly, they could even help clean up the planet and get rid of the pollution!
EVE continued to watch as her recording device kept playing back Hello, Dolly! She saw how WALL · E’s favorite characters intertwined their hands. She looked down at her own hands and interlocked them. Suddenly, she understood what WALL · E had been trying to do. He had wanted to hold hands ... just like the romantic couple in his movie.
Then EVE found herself watching images of the time on Earth when she had been dormant. She saw things she hadn’t known about until now—images of WALL · E caring for her as she slept: WALL · E shielding her from the rain with his umbrella; WALL · E buried in a sandstorm, trying to protect her; WALL · E keeping watch day and night while she was shut down. She even saw him trying to jump-start her heart with his own.
“WALL · E,” EVE said to herself, touched by the robot’s selfless devotion. Finally, she realized that WALL · E loved her!
八F(xiàn)在什么樣?”
