Preparing coffee and drinking a cup in the morning can be an excellent way to start the day. Something is soothing about the routine, and it feels great when the caffeine helps wake you up and lift you out of your sleepy fog. Do you ever feel like coffee just puts you in a better mood?

According to WebMD, people in the United States drink more than 600 million cups of coffee every day. There are many health benefits from coffee, including reducing your risk of cancer, stroke, Parkinson's, dementia, and Alzheimer's. Typically, four cups of coffee can be safe, but more than that can have adverse effects, from increased anxiety to insomnia. On the other hand, you can have too much of a good thing.

A typical cup of coffee contains 80 to 100 milligrams of caffeine, and don't forget decaf also contains a bit of caffeine — about two to 15 milligrams per cup. While 400 milligrams of caffeine — or four cups of coffee — is the maximum you should have a day, that can vary per person. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine and should have less. Finding how much coffee you should have in a day can be a trial and error process. If you experience symptoms of overuse of caffeine, like the jitters, cut down on the coffee (via the FDA).

Does your morning cup of coffee put a smile on your face? You're not the only one, and there's science behind it.

A September 2015 review of seven studies with over 330,000 participants found that drinking coffee can significantly reduce the risk of depression. They found the best dose of caffeine between 68 and 509 milligrams a day — about one to five cups of coffee.

Coffee can significantly improve your mood, according to an October 2018 study in Nutrients. Those who drank regular coffee had an improved mood compared to those who drank a cup of decaf or a placebo.

Adenosine is a naturally occurring chemical found in all of your cells, and it makes you feel sleepy. Coffee blocks adenosine, so you feel more alert and ready to concur the day (via StatPearls).

Science confirms coffee is happiness in a mug. So enjoy your morning cup of coffee for these positive benefits.
