Self-Shortening Shirts
下面是一段科技新聞類文字。這樣的文字往往簡潔明了,邏輯嚴(yán)密。這正是英文寫作中要注意的地方。
An Italian fashion house has recently manufactured a shirt that shortens its own sleeves when the weather gets warm. Before you get excited and rush out to buy a new set of clothes for the beach, consider the price: US$4,000 per shirt.
So how does the new shirt work? Well, it’s made from a mixture of nylon and an alloy called nitinol. Clothes containing this alloy can be twisted into any shape, but always return to their original shape when heated to a certain temperature. If the original shirt has short sleeves, when the temperature rises, so will the sleeves.
Even if you roll the shirt into a ball and sit on it, all you need to do is give it a quick blow with a hairdryer and it returns to its original shape. This has the added bonus that the shirt will never need ironing. It is also washable, totally non-allergenic and, of course, guaranteed never to stretch, unless you sit in the refrigerator.
