[00:13.64]Listening I
[00:17.32]Exercise 1
[00:20.81]Directions:
[00:24.30]Listen to the passage and fill in the following table.
[00:29.70]In China, education is considered a race
[00:35.28]Students have to begin as early as possible
[00:40.03]and have to proceed as quickly as possible along the trace
[00:45.61]The education system is considered to be successful
[00:50.98]when many students have reached the finish line as quickly as possible
[00:57.38]In America, we recognize the race too
[01:02.93]but we feel that the students should have a chance to wander much more
[01:09.59]even if not all of them reach the finish line
[01:14.70]As a result of their wandering,
[01:19.06]some of the participants may have more to offer by the end of the race.
[01:24.89]The advantage of the Chinese way
[01:29.14]is that more students become proficient and reach the finish line
[01:35.29]The disadvantage is that they have less to say or to show once they get there
[01:42.56]The disadvantage of the American way is that many students never finish the race
[01:50.27]The advantage is that some who do go "all the way"
[01:56.39]have very interesting and original things to say when they get there.
[02:03.44]Exercise 2
[02:06.76]Directions:
[02:10.14]Listen to the passage again and discuss the following question.
[02:16.33]Listening II
[02:20.22]Exercise 1
[02:23.71]Directions:
[02:27.60]Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks.
[02:32.50]Many people mistakenly think that creativity
[02:38.90]is the ability to think thoughts that no one else has ever thought
[02:46.03]In fact, creativity is just a way of looking at the ordinary in a different way
[02:55.36]Alex Osborn, one of the pioneers in the study of creativity and imagination,
[03:03.82]discovered that almost everyone is more creative than he thinks
[03:11.30]We usually don't recognize our good ideas as creativity in action
[03:19.80]For example, in a large mid-western city
[03:25.20]a group of thieves had invented a very efficient system
[03:31.36]They could go into a clothing store,
[03:36.76]take all the clothes away and be out of the store before the police arrive
[03:43.06]Then a young man had an idea
[03:47.56]He told stores to change the way they hung the clothe
[03:53.71]He told them to place some hangers with the hook facing in
[04:01.02]and some with the hook facing out
[04:05.52]The next time the police arrived,
[04:09.37]they found the young thieves removing the clothes one at a time
[04:15.42]Everyday creativity is just looking at things from a new point of view.
[04:23.16]Exercise 2
[04:26.58]Directions:
[04:30.00]Listen to the passage again and discuss the following questions.
[04:36.84]1)What do you think of the young man's solution?
