[00:00:01]The next thing I was conscious of was the sound of Charlie's cruiser turning onto the bricks of the driveway. 接下來我聽到了查理的巡邏車碾上車道的磚塊的聲音。 [00:05:38]I sat up in surprise, realizing the light was gone, behind the trees, and I had fallen asleep. 我吃驚地坐起來，發(fā)覺光線已經(jīng)消失在了樹叢后。 [00:10:54]I looked around, muddled, with the sudden feeling that I wasn't alone. 我方才睡著了。我茫然地環(huán)顧四周，忽然意識到我不是一個人。 [00:15:12]"Charlie?" But I could hear his door slamming in front of the house. “查理?”我出聲詢問道。但我能聽到從房子前頭傳來的他關(guān)門的聲音。 [00:22:45]I jumped up, foolishly edgy, gathering the now-damp quilt and my book. 我跳起來，急躁得有些可笑，收拾起已經(jīng)有些潮濕的褥子和書。 [00:27:56]I ran inside to get some oil heating on the stove, realizing that dinner would be late. 我沖進(jìn)屋里，往鍋里放了點油，開始加熱，意識到晚餐要推遲了。 [00:31:41]Charlie was hanging up his gun belt and stepping out of his boots when I came in. 當(dāng)我進(jìn)來的時候，查理正在把武裝帶掛起來，脫下靴子。 [00:37:29]"Sorry, Dad, dinner's not ready yet — I fell asleep outside." [00:49:23]I watched TV with Charlie after dinner, for something to do. 為了找些事干，晚飯后我和查理一起看電視。 [00:51:48]There wasn't anything on I wanted to watch, but he knew I didn't like baseball, 沒什么我想看的節(jié)目，但他知道我不喜歡棒球， [00:56:41]so he turned it to some mindless sitcom that neither of us enjoyed. He seemed happy, though, to be doing something together. 所以他換了臺，切換到某個我們都不怎么喜歡的情景喜劇。但他還是很開心，因為我們能待在一起做點什么。 [01:03:45]And it felt good, despite my depression, to make him happy. 如果不去管我的失落的話，讓他高興是件不錯的事。 [01:10:25]"Dad," I said during a commercial, "Jessica and Angela are going to look at dresses for the dance tomorrow night in Port Angeles, “爸爸，”插播廣告的時候我說道?！敖芪骺ê桶布蛩忝魈焱砩先ヌ焓垢廴フ椅钑┑囊路?， [01:17:03]and they wanted me to help them choose… do you mind if I go with them?" 她們想讓我?guī)兔μ暨x……你介意我跟她們一起去嗎?” [01:21:21]"Jessica Stanley?" he asked. “杰西卡?斯坦利?”他問道。 [01:23:58]"And Angela Weber." I sighed as I gave him the details. “還有安吉拉?韋伯?！蔽覈@了口氣，給了他更加詳盡的信息。 [01:26:48]He was confused. "But you're not going to the dance, right?" 他很困惑：“可你不打算去舞會，對吧?” [01:30:57]"No, Dad, but I'm helping them find dresses — you know, giving them constructive criticism." I wouldn't have to explain this to a woman. “我不去，爸爸。但我可以幫她們找衣服——你知道，給她們一點有建設(shè)性的意見?！比绻歉粋€女人說話，我就不用解釋這些了。

I watched TV with Charlie after dinner, for something to do. There wasn't anything on I wanted to watch, but he knew I didn't like baseball, so he turned it to some mindless sitcom that neither of us enjoyed. He seemed happy, though, to be doing something together. And it felt good, despite my depression, to make him happy.

為了找些事干，晚飯后我和查理一起看電視。沒什么我想看的節(jié)目，但他知道我不喜歡棒球，所以他換了臺，切換到某個我們都不怎么喜歡的情景喜劇。但他還是很開心，因為我們能待在一起做點什么。如果不去管我的失落的話，讓他高興是件不錯的事。

"Jessica Stanley?" he asked.

“杰西卡?斯坦利?”他問道。

"And Angela Weber." I sighed as I gave him the details.

“還有安吉拉?韋伯。”我嘆了口氣，給了他更加詳盡的信息。

他很困惑：“可你不打算去舞會，對吧?”

"No, Dad, but I'm helping them find dresses — you know, giving them constructive criticism." I wouldn't have to explain this to a woman.
