[00:01.10]The climate problem is the unintended consequence of our success. 氣候問題是我們的經(jīng)濟發(fā)展在無意中帶來的后果。 [00:05.29]We depend on fossil energy to keep our homes warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and lit at night; 我們太依賴化石能源在冬天取暖，夏天制冷，夜間照明， [00:11.14]we use it to travel across town and across continents. 長途旅行，環(huán)球觀光。 [00:14.34]Energy is a fundamental reason for the prosperity we enjoy, and we will not surrender this prosperity. 能源是經(jīng)濟繁榮的基礎，我們不可能放棄經(jīng)濟繁榮。 [00:22.09]The United States has 3 percent of the world population, and yet, we consume 25 percent of the energy. 美國人口占全世界的3%，但是我們消耗全世界25%的能源。 [00:29.40]By contrast, there are 1.6 billion people who don’t have access to electricity. 與此形成對照，全世界還有16億人沒有電， [00:36.11]Hundreds of millions of people still cook with twigs or dung. 數(shù)億人依靠燃燒樹枝和動物糞便來煮飯。 [00:40.26]The life we enjoy may not be within the reach of the developing world, 發(fā)展中國家的人民享受不到我們的生活， [00:45.17]but it is within sight, and they want what we have. 但是他們都看在眼里，他們渴望擁有我們擁有的東西。 [00:49.40]Here is the dilemma. 這就是新的挑戰(zhàn)。 [00:51.38]How much are we willing to invest, as a world society, 全世界作為一個整體，我們到底愿意付出多少來緩和氣候變化? [00:54.48]to mitigate the consequences of climate change that will not be realized for at least 100 years? 這種變化至少在100年內(nèi)還不會出現(xiàn)。 [01:00.47]Deeply rooted in all cultures, is the notion of generational responsibility. 代際責任的觀念深深植根于所有文化中。 [01:06.12]Parents work hard so that their children will have a better life. 父母為了他們的孩子有更好的生活而努力工作。 [01:09.42]Climate change will affect the entire world, but our natural focus is on the welfare of our immediate families. 氣候變化將影響整個世界，但是我們的天性使得我們只關心個人家庭的幸福。 [01:15.46]Can we, as a world society, meet our responsibility to future generations? 我們能不能把全世界看作一個整體，為子孫后代承擔責任? [01:23.17]While I am worried, I am hopeful we will solve this problem. 雖然我憂心忡忡，但是還是對未來抱由希望，這個問題將會得到解決。 [01:26.30]I became the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 我同意出任勞倫斯·伯克利國家實驗室主任， [01:29.38]in part because I wanted to enlist some of the best scientific minds to help battle against climate change. 部分原因是我想招募世界上一些最好的科學家，來研究應對氣候變化的對策。 [01:36.06]I was there only four and a half years, the shortest serving director in the 78-year history of the Lab, 我在那里干了4年半，是這個實驗室78年的歷史中任期最短的主任， [01:41.53]but when I left, a number of very exciting energy institutes at the Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley had been established. 但是當我離任時，在伯克利實驗室和伯克利分校，一些非常激動人心的能源研究機構已經(jīng)建立起來了。
