My personal connection to Harvard began back in1964

我個(gè)人同哈佛的聯(lián)系始于1964年

when I graduated from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore

我從約翰霍普金斯大學(xué)畢業(yè)

and matriculated here at the B-School

被錄取到這里的商學(xué)院

You're probably asking yourself or maybe whisperingto the person next to you

你們或許在想 或是正在同旁邊的人竊竊私語(yǔ)說(shuō)

How did he ever get into Harvard Business School

他怎么就進(jìn)入了哈佛商學(xué)院

particularly since his stellar academic record

畢竟他的學(xué)術(shù)成績(jī)這么出色

where he always made the top half of the class possible?

總能成為班上排名位于前半部分的學(xué)生

I have no idea

我不知道

The only people more surprised than me were my professors

比我自己更驚訝的可能就只有我的教授了

Anyway, here I am again back in Cambridge

無(wú)論如何 今天我又回到了劍橋

And I have noticed that a few things have changed since I was a student here

Elsie's a sandwich spot I used to love near the Square

is now a burrito shop

The Wursthaus which had great beer and sausage

原來(lái)提供美味啤酒和香腸的Wursthaus

is now an artisanal gastro-pub, whatever that is

And the old Holyoke Center is now named the Smith Campus Center

原來(lái)的霍利奧克中心現(xiàn)在改名叫史密斯校園中心

Don't you just hate it when alumni put their names all over everything?

你們難道不討厭校友用自己的名字命名所有東西嗎

I was thinking about that this morning as I walked into the Bloomberg Center

今天早上經(jīng)過(guò)河邊的哈佛商學(xué)院彭博中心時(shí)

on the Harvard Business School campus across the river

我就在想這個(gè)問(wèn)題

But the good news is

不過(guò)也有好消息

Harvard remains what it was when I first arrived on campus 50 years ago

哈佛保留了五十年前我剛進(jìn)校時(shí)優(yōu)良傳統(tǒng)

America's most prestigious university

仍然是美國(guó)最具聲望的大學(xué)

And, like other great universities

同其它偉大大學(xué)一樣

it lies at the heart of the American experiment in democracy

它位于美國(guó)民主實(shí)驗(yàn)的心臟地帶

Their purpose is not only to advance knowledge

哈佛的目的不只是增進(jìn)知識(shí)

but to advance the ideals of our nation

還包括增進(jìn)我們關(guān)于國(guó)家的理想

Great universities are places where people of all backgrounds, holding all beliefs

各種背景 各種信仰 探尋各種問(wèn)題的人

pursuing all questions

都能在偉大大學(xué)中

can come to study and debate their ideas freely and openly

自由開(kāi)放地學(xué)習(xí)知識(shí)并探討想法

Today, I'd like to talk with you about

今天我想和大家談?wù)?/p>

how important it is for that freedom to exist for everyone

這種自由對(duì)于每個(gè)人而言是多么重要

no matter how strongly we may disagree with another's viewpoint

無(wú)論我們多么強(qiáng)烈反對(duì)別人的觀點(diǎn)

Tolerance for other people's ideas

對(duì)他人想法的容忍

and the freedom to express your own

以及表達(dá)自身言論的自由

are inseparable values at great universities

是偉大大學(xué)中不可分割的價(jià)值
