and on April 15th, 2013 found most threatening
襲擊我們的恐怖分子感到恐懼
To them, we were a God-less country
在他們看來 我們是一個(gè)不信神的國(guó)家
But in fact, there is no country
但事實(shí)上 沒有任何國(guó)家
that protects the core of every faith and philosophy known to human kind
比美利堅(jiān)合眾國(guó)更愿意保護(hù)
free will more than the United States of America
人類的各種信仰和哲學(xué)
That protection, however, rests upon our constant vigilance
不過這種保護(hù) 需要依賴于我們持續(xù)的警覺
We like to think that the principle of separation of church and state is settled
我們傾向于認(rèn)為 政教分離的原則已經(jīng)確立
It is not
實(shí)際上沒有
And it never will be
而且永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)
It is up to us to guard it fiercely
我們需要堅(jiān)決地?fù)碜o(hù)它
and to ensure that equality under the law means equality under the law for everyone
確保法律條文下規(guī)定的平等 對(duì)于每個(gè)人都是平等的
If you want the freedom to worship as you wish
如果你希望按照自己希望的那樣進(jìn)行宗教活動(dòng)
to speak as you wish, and to marry whom you wish
按照希望的那樣發(fā)表言論 同希望的人結(jié)婚
you must tolerate my freedom to do so or not do so as well
你就必須寬容我像這樣做的自由
What I do may offend you
我做的事可能會(huì)冒犯你
You may find my actions immoral or unjust
你可能覺得我的行為不道德或是非正義
But attempting to restrict my freedoms in ways that you would not restrict your own
但你不能用自身沒有的限制方式來限制我的自由
leads only to injustice
否則這只會(huì)導(dǎo)致不公
We cannot deny others the rights and privileges that we demand for ourselves
我們?cè)谧约阂髾?quán)利的同時(shí) 不能否定其他人的相同權(quán)利
And that is true in cities
對(duì)于城市是這樣
and it is no less true at universities
對(duì)于大學(xué)也同樣是這樣
where the forces of repression appear to be stronger now, I think
學(xué)術(shù)壓迫的勢(shì)力正在抬頭
than they have been since the 1950s
