I was so taken aback by what I saw that I had to askmyself,

I promised myself that before I came back to Africa,

Over the years, Melinda and I did learn more about the pressing needs of the poor.

On a later trip to South Africa,

在之后一次去南非的過程中

I paid a visit to a hospital for patients with MDR-TB,

我造訪了一家治療MDR-TB病人的醫(yī)院

multidrug resistant tuberculosis,

MDR-TB也就是多耐藥肺結(jié)核

a disease with a cure rate of under 50%.

這種疾病的治愈率低于50%

I remember that hospital as a place of despair.

我還記得 那所醫(yī)院是一個充滿絕望的地方

It was a giant open ward,

一個開放式的巨大病房中

with a sea of patients shuffling around in pajamas, wearing masks.

到處都是身著病服和口罩 拖著沉重步伐走動的病人

There was one floor just for children, including some babies lying in bed.

有一層樓專門容納兒童病人 包括剛出生不久的嬰兒

They had a little school for kids who were well enough to learn,

這里還有一所小型學(xué)校 為身體條件足夠好的孩子們準(zhǔn)備

but many of the children couldn't make it,

但很多孩子都沒好轉(zhuǎn)到能夠上學(xué)

and the hospital didn't seem to know whether it was worth it to keep the school open.

醫(yī)院不知道開這么一所學(xué)校 是否有些不值得
