Tests are part of a student's life. The purpose of testing is to translate intellectual performance into numbers for comparison within the same standards. The Educational Testins Service(ETS)has created different testing programs for different purposes. The SAT is what universities look at for undergraduate admission. The Graduate Record Examinations(GRE)is for those who are going on to graduate schools. If it is a management school, they prlbably require Graduate Management Admission Test(GMAT)as well.In addition, international students must submit their Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL)scores.
SAT,GRE,and GMAT all have score ranges from 200 to 800.The more useful information is the percentile range, which shows how many percent of the test takers had lower scores than a specific score. The mean score is about 500,but the distribution is not linear.TOEFL now has paper-based and computer-based formats. The paper-based test has scores from 310 to 677,and the computer-based test is 40 to 300.The two systems are interchangeable;ETS has a table showing corresponding scores in the to systems.
Getting high scores on there tests is among the top priorities, but students should never forget that admissiona also look at other criteria before giving out acceptance letters.
