Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th President of theUnited States, serving from 1963 to 1969. He wasborn in 1908 on a small farmhouse in central Texasand felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up.He workedhis way through Southwest Texas StateTeachers College and graduated as a teacher in1930. In 1937 he campaigned successfully for theHouse of Representatives.

His political skill helped a number ofkey Eisenhower measures pass.

In the 1960 campaign, Johnson, as John F. Kennedy's running mate, was elected VicePresident. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in asPresident. He did not run for re-election because hewanted to focus on world peace during the Vietnam War. He died of a heart attack, aged 64, athis Texas ranch in 1973.
