176 最偉大的獵手

It is neither presumptuous nor pretentious of me to claim that I am one of the greatest hunters that has ever lived.

如果我說(shuō)我是有史以來(lái)最偉大的獵手，這并不意味著我是一個(gè)自以為是、自命不凡的家伙。

It is not the sort of greatness with which one presumably has the preponderance or prestige of pursuing the presidency and entering the prestigious presidential election.

我說(shuō)我偉大，并不是說(shuō)我可能有絕對(duì)優(yōu)勢(shì)或足夠威望去追逐總統(tǒng)的職位，并且能夠參加頗負(fù)盛名的總統(tǒng)選舉；

Nor is it the sort of pretension of the meager variety with which one is presumptuous concerning one's abilities in the prevailing fashions of the day.

也不是指那種夠不上檔次的自負(fù)感，這種心理足以使人對(duì)自己適應(yīng)盛極一時(shí)的流行時(shí)尚的能力過(guò)于自信，甚至到了傲視一切的程度。

It is the presumption, however, that one must take when one is put in a situation which prescribes the utilization of the primal instincts for self-preservation.

For example, if one has the preoccupation of frequenting animal preserves as I do, it is a prerequisite that one must have the courage to fall under the pressure of choosing a prey or becoming one.

My greatness as a hunter does not lie in any preponderance, prestige, or sophistication of any kind.

我作為獵手的偉大之處不在于我的優(yōu)勢(shì)，不在于我的聲望，也不在于任何高深復(fù)雜的技術(shù)。

On the contrary, it lies in the primal ability to kill as an animal or to be killed as one.

相反卻在于一種原始本能．是像動(dòng)物般去殺其它動(dòng)物呢，還是被其它動(dòng)物所殺害。
