"Fortunate boys!" said the Controller. "No pains have been spared to make your livesemotionally easy–to preserve you, so far as that is possible, from having emotions at all."

"Ford's in his flivver," murmured the D.H.C. "All's well with the world."

"Lenina Crowne?" said Henry Foster, echoing the Assistant Predestinator's question as hezipped up his trousers.

“列寧娜·克朗嗎?”亨利·福斯特拉上褲子拉鏈，回答局長(zhǎng)助理說(shuō)。

"Oh, she's a splendid girl. Wonderfully pneumatic. I'm surprised you haven't had her."

“哦，她是個(gè)非常好的姑娘，極有靈氣?？赡憔尤粵](méi)有得到過(guò)她，我很意外。”

"I can't think how it is I haven't," said the Assistant Predestinator.

“我想不出我怎么會(huì)沒(méi)有得到過(guò)她，”命運(yùn)預(yù)定局局長(zhǎng)助理說(shuō)，

"I certainly will. At the first opportunity."

“有機(jī)會(huì)我肯定會(huì)的。”

From his place on the opposite side of the changing-room aisle, Bernard Marx overheard whatthey were saying and turned pale.

換瓶室走道那邊的伯納·馬克思偷聽(tīng)到兩人的談話，臉色蒼白了。

"And to tell the truth," said Lenina, "I'm beginning to get just a tiny bit bored with nothing butHenry every day."

“說(shuō)實(shí)話，”列寧娜說(shuō)，“每天都跟亨利一起，再?zèng)]有別的東西，我也覺(jué)得厭倦。”

She pulled on her left stocking. "Do you know Bernard Marx?"

她拉上了左腳的襪子。“你認(rèn)得伯納·馬克思嗎?”

she asked in a tone whose excessive casualness was evidently forced.

她說(shuō)話時(shí)口氣過(guò)分隨便，顯然是裝出來(lái)的。

Fanny looked startled. "You don't mean to say …?"

范尼露出吃驚的神色。“你不會(huì)是說(shuō)……。”

"Why not? Bernard's an Alpha Plus. Besides, he asked me to go to one of the SavageReservations with him.

“為什么不行?伯納是個(gè)阿爾法加，而且他約過(guò)我和他一起到野蠻人保留地去。

I've always wanted to see a Savage Reservation."

那地方我一直就想去看看呢。”

"But his reputation?"

“可是他那名聲?”

"What do I care about his reputation?"

“我為什么非得要管他的什么名聲?”

"They say he doesn't like Obstacle Golf."

“據(jù)說(shuō)他不喜歡玩障礙高爾夫。”

"They say, they say," mocked Lenina.

“據(jù)說(shuō)，據(jù)說(shuō)。”列寧娜嘲笑范尼。

"And then he spends most of his time by himself–alone." There was horror in Fanny's voice.

“而且他大部分時(shí)間都一個(gè)人過(guò)——孤獨(dú)。”范尼的口氣帶著害怕。

"Well, he won't be alone when he's with me. And anyhow, why are people so beastly to him?

“晤，可他跟我在一起就不會(huì)孤獨(dú)了。而且，大家對(duì)他為什么那么惡劣?

I think he's rather sweet." She smiled to herself; how absurdly shy he had been!

我倒覺(jué)得他挺可愛(ài)的。”她悄悄地笑了。伯納那羞澀的態(tài)度多么荒謬!

Frightened almost–as though she were a World ControUer and he a Gamma-Minus machineminder.

幾乎是害怕——就好像她是世界總統(tǒng)，而伯納卻是個(gè)管理機(jī)器的伽瑪減似的。

"Consider your own lives," said Mustapha Mond. "Has any of you ever encountered aninsurmountable obstacle?"

“想一想你們自己的生活吧，”穆斯塔法·蒙德說(shuō)，“你們有誰(shuí)遇到過(guò)無(wú)法克服的困難沒(méi)有?”

The question was answered by a negative silence.

回答是沉默，表示否定。
