After a pause, sunk to a whisper, but a whisper,somehow, more penetrating than the loudest cry.

過了一會兒，那聲音又降為一種低語繼續(xù)說著?？赡堑驼Z卻比最高亢的聲音還要動人心魂。

"The feet of the Greater Being," it went on, andrepeated the words: "The feet of the Greater Being."

“那更偉大的存在的腳步。”那低語繼續(xù)重復(fù)，說到“那更偉大的存在的腳步”

The whisper almost expired. "The feet of theGreater Being are on the stairs."

時幾乎聽不見了。“那更偉大的存在的腳步已經(jīng)來到樓梯上。”

And once more there was silence; and the expectancy, momentarily relaxed, was stretchedagain, tauter, tauter, almost to the tearing point.

又是寂靜。那暫時松懈的期望又繃緊了，越來越緊，越來越緊，幾乎要繃斷了。

The feet of the Greater Being–oh, they heard thern, they heard them, coming softlydown thestairs, coming nearer and nearer down the invisible stairs.

更為偉大的存在的腳步——哦，他們聽見了，聽見了，從樓梯上款款地走下來了，從看不見的樓梯上逐漸走近了。

The feet of the Greater Being. And suddenly the tearing point was reached.

更偉大的存在的腳步突然來到了斷裂點，

Her eyes staring, her lips parted. Morgana Rothschild sprang to her feet.

摩爾根娜·羅斯柴爾德瞪大眼睛，張大嘴巴，跳了起來。

"I hear him," she cried. "I hear him."

“我聽見他了，”她叫道，“我聽見他了。”

"He's coming," shouted Sarojini Engels.

“他來了。”薩柔妮季·恩格斯叫了起來。

"Yes, he's coming, I hear him." Fifi Bradlaugh and Tom Kawaguchi rose simultaneously to theirfeet.

“對，他來了，我聽見他的聲音了。”菲菲·布拉勞芙和湯姆·川日兩人同時跳了起來。

"Oh, oh, oh!" Joanna inarticulately testified.

“哦，哦，哦!”喬安娜也來含糊不清地作證。

"He's coming!" yelled Jim Bokanovsky.

The President leaned forward and, with a touch, released a delirium of cymbals and blownbrass, a fever of tom-tomming.

組長身子前傾，按了一下，放出了一片鐃鈸的囈語、銅管的高腔和鼓點的急響。

"Oh, he's coming!" screamed Clara Deterding. "Aie!" and it was as though she were having herthroat cut.

“啊，他來了!”克拉拉回笛特斤尖叫著。“阿咦——!”仿佛有人割著她的喉嚨。

Feeling that it was time for him to do something, Bernard also jumped up and shouted:

伯納覺得該是他有所動作的時候了，便也跳了起來叫道：

"I hear him; He's coming." But it wasn't true. He heard nothing and, for him, nobody wascoming.

“我聽見了，他來了。”可他那話是假的，他什么也沒聽見，也沒有覺得有誰到來。

Nobody–in spite of the music, in spite of the mounting excitement.

誰也沒有——盡管有那樣的音樂，盡管大家越來越激動。

But he waved his arms, he shouted with the best of them; and when the others began to jigand stamp and shuffle, he also jigged and shuffled.

他一個勁地揮舞著雙手，跟著他們之中最激動的人大喊大叫;別人開始手舞腳踏地亂蹦;他也手舞腳蹈地亂蹦。

Round they went, a circular procession of dancers, each with hands on the hips of the dancerpreceding, round and round, shouting in unison, stamping to the rhythm of the music withtheir feet, beating it, beating it out with hands on the buttocks in front; twelve pairs of handsbeating as one; as one, twelve buttocks slabbily resounding.

他們圍成了一圈，轉(zhuǎn)著圈子跳起舞來。每個人的手扶住前面人的腰，一圈又一圈地跳著，齊聲呼喊著，腳下踏著音樂的節(jié)拍，然后用手拍打著前面人的屁股;十二雙手統(tǒng)一地拍打，拍得十二個屁股啪啪山響。

Twelve as one, twelve as one. "I hear Him, I hear Him coming."

十二個人合成了一個，十二合一了。“我聽見他了，我聽見他來了。”

The music quickened; faster beat the feet, faster, faster fell the rhythmic hands.

音樂加快了，步伐加快了，拍手的節(jié)奏也加快了。

And all at once a great synthetic bass boomed out the words which announced theapproaching atonement and final consummation of solidarity,

突然，一種合成低音嗡嗡地唱出了話語，宣布了贖罪的降臨、團結(jié)的完成、十二合一的到來。

the coming of the Twelve-in-One, the incarnation of the Greater Being.

十二合一就是偉大存在的肉身體現(xiàn)。

"Orgy-porgy," it sang, while the tom-toms continued to beat their feverish tattoo: "Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun, Kiss the girls and make them One. Boys at 0ne with girls at peace; Orgy-porgy gives release."

那低音唱道：“歡快呀淋漓。”鼓點嘭，嘭，繼續(xù)敲打出狂熱的節(jié)奏：“歡快呀淋漓，快活呀福帝，親親大姑娘，親得她合為一，姑娘和小伙子靜靜地偎依，發(fā)泄呀狂喜，痛快又淋漓。”

"Orgy-porgy," the dancers caught up the liturgical refrain,

“歡快呀淋漓，”舞蹈者跟著禱告詞的疊句唱了起來，

"Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun, kiss the girls …"

“快活呀福帝，親親大姑娘……”
