第十六章 費城
Louis worked all the last week of September for theSwan Boat man in the Boston Public Garden.
路易斯在九月的最后一周里一直在為波士頓大眾公園的天鵝游艇老板工作。
He was a great success and was becoming famous.
他大獲成功，聲名日顯。
On Saturday, the Boatman paid him a hundreddollars in cash, which Louis placed carefully in hismoneybag.
星期六，游艇老板付了他一百美元的現(xiàn)金，路易斯把這錢小心地放到了他的錢袋里。
The Boatman, after paying the first night's bill at the Ritz Carlton Hotel,

decided to let Louis sleep on the lake instead of in the hotel, and this suited Louis better.
決定以后還是讓路易斯睡到湖上而不是飯店里，因為湖上對路易斯更適合些。
He slept with the ducks and geese on the lake, floating gracefully on the surface of the water,his head tucked under his wing.
他與鴨子和鵝一起睡在湖上，高雅地浮在水面，把他的頭扎到翅膀下面。
Louis took good care of his trumpet. He kept it polished, and once a week he cleaned the spitout of it.
路易斯細心地保養(yǎng)著他的小號。他讓它時刻保持光潔，每過一周還要清洗一遍里面的口水。
He learned new songs whenever he could, by listening to people's radios and by attendingconcerts.

Whenever he played it, he thought of Serena, and always, when he finished it, the passengerson the Swan Boat clapped loudly and cheered.
無論何時，只要他一吹起這首歌，就會想起塞蕾娜，每到吹完的時候，天鵝游艇上的乘客們總是大聲地鼓掌喝彩。
Louis liked applause. It made him feel lighthearted and gay.

Sometimes, at the end of the afternoon, Louis played "Now the Day Is Over."
有時，在下午快結束的時候，路易斯會吹起“現(xiàn)在白天已經過去”這首歌。
He made it sound sweet and sad.

One afternoon, when he was leading the last trip of the day, he played the "Cradle Song" byBrahms.
一天下午，他在給最后一班游艇導航時，吹起了勃拉姆斯的“搖籃曲”。
The passengers sang the words.
