突然，斯圖亞特睜開(kāi)眼坐了起來(lái)。

He thought about the letter he had sent and he wondered whether it had ever been delivered.

他想不起來(lái)他寫(xiě)的那封信到底郵了沒(méi)有。

It was an unusually small letter, of course, and might have gone unnoticed in the letterbox.

那封信非常的小，也許不會(huì)被人發(fā)現(xiàn)。

This idea filled him with fears and worries.

這念頭使他恐懼并擔(dān)憂起來(lái)。

But soon he let his thoughts return to the river, and as he lay there a whippoorwill began to sing on the opposite shore, darkness spread over the land, and Stuart dropped off to sleep.

可不久他的思緒便又回到小河上了，在夜鴟開(kāi)始在對(duì)岸唱歌，黑暗籠罩了大地的時(shí)候，斯圖亞特終于睡著了。

The next day dawned cloudy.

第二天有些多云。

Stuart had to go up to the village to have the oil changed in his car,

斯圖亞特要到鎮(zhèn)子里去給他的車加油，

so he hid the canoe under some leaves, tied it firmly to a stone,

因此便把他的獨(dú)木舟系在一塊石頭上藏到樹(shù)葉下，

and went off on his errand, still thinking about Harriet and wishing it were a nicer day.

然后才滿懷著對(duì)哈麗雅特的渴望和這一天的期盼走了。

The sky looked rainy.

天看起來(lái)好像要下雨。

Stuart returned from the village with a headache, but he hoped that it would be better before five o'clock.

斯圖亞特從鎮(zhèn)子里回來(lái)時(shí)有點(diǎn)頭痛，他希望在五點(diǎn)鐘前可以好起來(lái)。

He felt rather nervous, as he had never taken a girl canoeing before.

他非常的燥亂，因?yàn)樗麖臎](méi)有過(guò)和一個(gè)女孩同乘獨(dú)木舟的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。
