The giant Buddha is part of the Po Lin monasteryand temple complex set up nearly 100 years ago bythree Zen masters.

天壇大佛是寶蓮禪寺建筑群的一部分。禪寺是在約百年前由三位禪師創(chuàng)立的。

Zen has developed as a part of Mahayana Buddhism,the school of Buddhism practised in China and othernorthern Asian countries.

禪宗是大乘佛教逐漸發(fā)展而成的一個(gè)分支，是在中國(guó)及其他北亞國(guó)家廣為傳播的宗派。

Zen Buddhists believe that all people have the qualities that the Buddha had, and emphasisethat these can be developed and were not unique to the Buddha only.

禪宗相信所有人都具有佛性，并強(qiáng)調(diào)佛性可以逐步養(yǎng)成，而非佛陀獨(dú)有。

The aim of Zen is to discover this quality within each person, through meditation and practiceof the Buddha's teachings.

禪宗的目的，就是要通過(guò)冥想和實(shí)修來(lái)發(fā)掘每個(gè)人潛在的佛性。

The ultimate goal is to become a completely enlightened Buddha.

最終目標(biāo)則是成為大徹大悟的佛。

Meditation has always been central to Buddhism, but here in China a new brand of meditationwas born.

冥想一直都是佛教修行的核心方式。但在中國(guó)，它有了另外一個(gè)名字。

And it took its name from a Sanskrit word Dhyana which is actually very hard to translate, butit means a kind of alert, productive state of mind.

它來(lái)源于梵文中“Dhyana”一詞。這個(gè)詞很難精準(zhǔn)翻譯，它指的是一種敏銳而豐富的精神狀態(tài)。

In China it was called Chan and when it travels to Japan it becomes Zen.

中國(guó)人稱它為“禪”。流傳到日本以后成為“Zen”(還是“禪”)。

It's a school of Buddhism which lays enormous emphasis on certain kinds of meditativepractice.

這是個(gè)對(duì)特定種類的冥想修行極其重視的佛教宗派。

What you try to do is purely to empty your mind.

你要努力做的僅僅是清除雜念。

It has an ideology that rational thought is not going to get you to enlightenment or Nirvana.

它的觀點(diǎn)是，理性思維不會(huì)使你開悟或涅槃。

It's practised here in a small secluded monastery, minutes away from the giant Buddha.

實(shí)修的地點(diǎn)在一個(gè)僻靜小禪院中，距離大佛有幾分鐘路程。

Formal silent meditation is central to Zen and is practised by both the laity and the ordainedtogether.
