July 22,2016
Here are the five most popular songs in the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart, for the week ending July 23, 2016.
The chart has been kind enough to give us a new song this week. This one's a bit of a reclamation project.
Number 5: Sia Featuring Sean Paul "Cheap Thrills"
Sia kicks it up a slot to number five with “Cheap Thrills” – the remix features Sean Paul. When not writing songs for herself, Sia writes them for other acts…who nonetheless sometimes turn her down. “Cheap Thrills” was rejected by Rihanna, so it ended up on Sia’s latest album This Is Acting.
Turns out there was a bit of role-playing in our next song as well.
Musician Calvin Harris arrives at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada, May 17, 2015.Number 4: Calvin Harris Featuring Rihanna "This Is What You Came For"
Calvin Harris and Rihanna strengthen a slot to fourth place with “This Is What You Came For.” If you look at the song credits, you see that Harris co-wrote this song with someone named “Nils Sjoberg.” It turns out that “Nils” is none other than Harris' ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. They split in June after 15 months together. Going forward, Swift will receive songwriting credit under her own name.
Number 3: Chainsmokers Featuring Daya "Don't Let Me Down"
The Chainsmokers and Daya hold tight in third place with “Don’t Let Me Down.” The Chainsmokers are about to cover some ground: Saturday (July 23) finds them at the Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium, with August dates planned for the Philippines and Japan. It won’t be their first time in the Philippines: Andrew Taggart and Alex Paul last visited in 2014.
As for Daya, she’s about to make her acting debut. She’ll play herself in Nickelodeon’s TV reboot of the 2003 movie "School Of Rock."
Number 2: Justin Timberlake "Can't Stop The Feeling"
Justin Timberlake remains your runner-up with “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” Ten years ago this week, Justin released the single “Sexy Back.” It was his first number one song, spending seven weeks at the top. It was also his first number one hit in the U.K., and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
Number 1: Drake Featuring Wizkid & Kyla "One Dance"
Drake hits the road this week, but back home on the charts, nothing changes: “One Dance” rules the Hot 100 for a ninth week.
It also spends a 14th week atop the U.K. pop singles list. On July 20 Drake kicked off his North American tour in Austin, Texas. He and co-headliner Future will be on the road together through mid-October.
That’s it for this week, but the charts never sleep! Join us in seven days for another great lineup.
