Scientists have discovered that coronavirus could linger in patients for more than a month, which means it’s possible they could transmit the virus long after symptoms subside.

The duration of viral shedding — which is the length of time the virus can be transmitted from someone infected — was found in one instance to be 37 days after the person contracted the illness. The median duration was 20 days.

The findings, published in the Lancet this week, indicate that the current recommendation for isolation — two weeks — may not go far enough to prevent transmission of the virus.

Chinese researchers pulled medical records and lab data to track COVID-19’s presence in 191 patients treated at Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital. Of the patients, 54 had died from the infection, which remained in their systems until death.

The results of the research have “important implications for both patient-isolation decision-making and guidance around the length of antiviral treatment,” Dr. Fei Zhou, of the Peking Union Medical College, writes in the report.

The study also notes that 48% of coronavirus patients had a comorbidity, such as hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease, which decreased their odds of kicking the virus, along with old age.

Scientists also note that during the 2003 outbreak of SARS, which is another form of coronavirus, only a third of patients still carried the virus after four weeks.

For influenza patients, viral shedding typically persists five to 10 days, beginning within 24 hours before or after the onset of symptoms. Children and immunocompromised individuals, however, may shed longer, for weeks or months, according to the World Health Organization.

Coronavirus has affected 125 countries, with over 130,000 confirmed cases. More than 4,700 people have died from the illness.
