24　adequate，enough，ample，abundant，sufficient和plentiful

① adequate著重符合一個客觀要求或標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，可指數(shù)量上足夠，質(zhì)量上適當(dāng)。
The pay was adequate for me. 所得報酬夠我用的。
For the use of beginners，the book is adequate. 對初學(xué)者來說，這本書夠用了。
② enough是常用詞，指足以滿足某種目的或愿望，enough在表示數(shù)量時可同adequate和sufficient換用，但enough不表示質(zhì)量。enough可用作后置定語。
They have enough/adequate computers for students to practice on. 他們有足夠的計算機(jī)讓學(xué)生上機(jī)訓(xùn)練。
There was enough/sufficient food for a month. 有夠一個月用的食物。
We have got men enough. 我們有足夠的人手。
③ ample指“充足而有余的”，指時間、商品等。
This leaves her ample time to prepare three meals a day. 這使她有充足的時間一天做三頓飯。
④ abundant指就某個方面來說“豐富的，豐裕的（rich in sth.）”。
They had an abundant fruit harvest last year. 他們?nèi)ツ晁筘S收。
The trees are abundant in fruit. 樹上果實(shí)累累。
Rice is abundant in the river valleys. 河谷里盛產(chǎn)稻米。
⑤ sufficient指為特定目的和需要提供足夠的數(shù)量（as much as one needs）。
He is earning sufficient money to support a family of five. 他的收入足以養(yǎng)活五口之家。
They have got sufficient food and water for an 8-day journey. 他們已準(zhǔn)備好夠8天旅行用的食物和水。
⑥ plentiful程度大于ample，當(dāng)然更大于enough、adequate和sufficient。
南泥灣精神使陜北能做到ample food and clothing（豐衣足食），現(xiàn)在的小康生活該是plentiful food and clothing（充足的衣食）了，而正在實(shí)現(xiàn)abundant food and clothing（豐富的衣食）。
