First of all , let's have a review. 大家還記得在第八課中我們學(xué)到的與“covering one's whole body”以及“very much , completely , thoroughly”同義的口語(yǔ)說(shuō)法嗎?這些說(shuō)法都跟我們的身體部位有關(guān)。它們是：from head to toe, from head to feet , from top to toe 渾身上下，從頭到腳，遍布全身;徹底徹尾地，完全所有地，極其，非常。

現(xiàn)在我們開始第9課的學(xué)習(xí)。Lesson Nine: How to say “明白”in real American English? 第九課：明白 地道美語(yǔ)怎么說(shuō)?

【課堂詳講】

說(shuō)道“明白”，大家自然會(huì)首先想到表示“明白”的我們?cè)偈煜げ贿^(guò)的詞了“understand”, it means "grasp the meaning ( of a word , a person, a language)". 可是既然Juliet是在話說(shuō)地道美語(yǔ)，當(dāng)然要交給大家一個(gè)地道的說(shuō)法。What's it? Listen to the following sentence: I can't make head nor tail out of the lousy memo. 我完全看不懂這分潦草的便簽。在這個(gè)句子中用了一個(gè)含有head， h-e-a-d(腦袋)和tail , t-a-i-l (尾巴)這2個(gè)單詞的一個(gè)動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ)了表述：明白，弄清楚。它是：make head or tail out of something. 這個(gè)短語(yǔ)通常與cannot , couldn't 搭配用于否定句中。在否定句中，make head or tail out of 中的or就要變?yōu)閚or, n-o-r. 此外，這個(gè)短語(yǔ)中的out 可以省略，即：make head or tail of .

Let's look at two more sentences. 1 I can't make head nor tail out of what he is saying . 我弄不清楚他在說(shuō)什么。2 She couldn't make head nor tail of the form she is signing. 她弄不懂她在簽署的表格。

Can't ( couldn't ) make head nor tail of 這個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)后面只能夠跟物，那么我們要說(shuō)不明白某人做某事，這還得用上understand這個(gè)詞的一個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)，understand somebody doing something. 注意了understand后面跟人稱代詞的賓格，賓格后用現(xiàn)在分詞短語(yǔ)，這個(gè)分詞短語(yǔ)做賓語(yǔ)的補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)。For example: I can't understand him handling the problem in such a foolish way. 我不明白他用如此愚蠢的方式處理這個(gè)問(wèn)題。
