今天，翩翩和David跟大家聊聊，英美國家特別重要的一個現(xiàn)代生活文化：streaming service（流媒體服務(wù)）。

1.What are streaming services? “流媒體”？

streaming service: an online provider that loads movies through an internet connection

聯(lián)網(wǎng)就可以下載并且觀看影視節(jié)目的平臺

比如美國的Netflix（網(wǎng)飛），中國的Youku, iQIYI, Tencent（騰訊視頻）等都是streaming services。

這些平臺會買下某些爆款劇的版權(quán)，我們充會員，就可以觀看。

2.The movement of media consumption 媒體消費的發(fā)展

movie theaters 電影院（最早的觀影方式）

露天電影：movie/ theater in the public

美國的露天電影：在一個大的停車場（parking lot），放一個大的屏幕（screen），大家可以坐在車里看電影。

電影《卡薩布蘭卡》電影講的就是：男主和愛人在一個炎熱的夏天，在汽車里看露天電影發(fā)生的愛情故事。

movie theaters也會放映一些old films，比如最近重映的《阿凡達》（Avatar）。

這些old movies雖然old，但卻是classic，timeless。

*classic：adj. 經(jīng)典的

*timeless：adj. 永恒的

你可以pay to borrow a movie theater或者rent a movie theater，來播放your own movie（自己的電影）或者pick the movie you want to watch（選自己喜歡看的）。

*pay to borrow/ rent a movie theater：包場

當(dāng)一部電影comes out后，人們會去movie theater觀看的一個重要的原因是：

They don’t want to get spoilers. 不想被劇透。

People hate spoilers. 人們討厭劇透。

*come out：上映；發(fā)布

*spoiler：劇透

DVDs and CDs 碟片租賃

在美國，可以出租DVD和CD的是：Redbox。

Redbox：It’s on the street.就在美國街頭，比如，Seven-Eleven或其他小商店的外面。里面沒有服務(wù)員，提供自助服務(wù)（help yourself）。付上錢之后，就可以rent DVDs和CDs。

Renting services 租賃服務(wù)

隨著時代的發(fā)展，Amazon, Youtube, iTunes等平臺相繼出現(xiàn)，租賃由stores轉(zhuǎn)到成了online。人們足不出戶，上網(wǎng)就可以rent a movie。

Streaming services “流媒體”

西方國家的影視播放平臺：Netflix, Disney plus, Hulu, HBO

在這些平臺，大家pay subscription fee（充會員），然后就可以看anything in that streaming service。

3.Competition among streaming services 影視平臺間的競爭

Streaming became very popular recently, so the competition（競爭） is getting stronger.

影視平臺間的競爭越來越激烈。

這些平臺的subscription fee（會員費），比如Netflix，如果是按年付的話，就會更劃算：It’s a better deal.

事實上，很多Netflix users沒有付費，因為可以“一人付款，多設(shè)備賬號登錄”（1 account can have multiple devices）。這些用戶leech off別人的account。

*It’s a better deal. 更劃算。

*leech off：using someone else to get something 借助別人獲取利益

leech /li:t?/ ：n. 水蛭；吸血鬼 / v. 依附并榨取某人

To compete（為了競爭），很多streaming services，比如，Netflix，Hulu， HBO Max，Disney plus都有自己的originals（原創(chuàng)作品）。

Netflix：The Queen’s Gambit《女王的棋局》；House of the Cards《紙牌屋》

HBO Max：Superman系列

Disney plus：Avengers《復(fù)仇者聯(lián)盟》；Star Wars《星球大戰(zhàn)》

中國的影視播放平臺，像芒果TV，優(yōu)酷、騰訊也都有自創(chuàng)劇，我們可以說：

With You（《最好的我們》）is an iQIYI original.

4.Other streaming services 其他“流媒體”

Streaming services are not only for movies, they are also for music, videos.

音樂和短視頻也有streaming services。

比如，在中國，比較受歡迎的音樂類streaming services有：網(wǎng)易云音樂，QQ音樂。

美國兩大主流聽音樂平臺：Spotify & Apple Music

無論是影視播放平臺還是聽音樂平臺，無論是美國的還是中國的streaming services，它們get popular的原因都是：

They are very affordable and convenient.

*affordable /??f?:rd?bl/ ：adj. 能支付得起的

*convenient /k?n?vi:ni?nt/ ：adj. 便利的

大家都很重視劃算便利。

Both China and the US value affordability and convenience.
