Hope was but a timid friend；

She sat without the grated den，

Watching how my fate would tend，

Even as selfish-hearted men.

She was cruel in her fear；

Through the bars one weary day，

Still in strife, she whispered peace；

艾米莉·勃朗特（Emily Bronte），英國著名女作家，《呼嘯山莊》是她的代表作。她曾與姐妹合出過一本詩集，直到20世紀(jì)她才被公認(rèn)為英國三大女詩人之一。艾米莉生性內(nèi)向而孤傲，深居簡出，喜歡一個(gè)人在荒原上散步。長相平平的她一輩子都沒有談過戀愛。與她的姊妹一樣，艾米莉的身體因?yàn)楫?dāng)?shù)氐臍夂蚨@得衰弱。在1848年9月她的兄弟的喪禮期間，艾米莉感染了風(fēng)寒，并且拒絕服用藥物。1848年12月19日，艾米莉因結(jié)核病去世。
