Thirteen and 14-year-olds at Hangzhou No 3 Middle School in Zhejiang province weighed themselves on Monday before the Spring Festival holiday, the Qianjiang Evening News reported on Tuesday.
If they put on more than 2kg over the Spring Festival they will be made to go for a run every day of the next term.
“Recently as I was walking around a shopping mall with friends, I saw a weighing scale and suddenly had an idea: I wanted the students to weigh themselves before the holidays and give them an awareness of the risks of putting on more weight later on,” the class’s teacher Chen Wei told the newspaper.
One of his pupils Chen Kexiang pointed out that most people used the holiday period to eat a lot and took little exercise so it was going to be hard to avoid putting on weight.
But another, named Zhang Lijia, said that most students’ weights were in the standard healthy range, adding: “It’s just getting weighed, what is there to be scared of?”
Another pupil Wang Hang said: “The food they serve in the school canteen is really tasty, I eat five people’s portions almost every day.
“I must control my portions, I will try to limit my meals to two or three bowls of food.”
Reactions to the scheme were mixed on Chinese social media.
“I think it’s a great thing to make students aware of their physical health,” one user said.
Another comment read: “If they’re middle school sophomores, their bodies are growing. Isn’t it quite normal to have weight fluctuations?”
China faces a school obesity epidemic and already has the highest number of obese children in the world.
One 2017 study has warned that its number of obese children could hit 50 million by 2030.
Experts have attributed this to a large amount of processed foods in young people’s diets, as well as high academic pressures which leave students with less time for physical activity.

TRYING ON CLOTHES
According to a recent survey by Debenhams, the average woman burns 385 calories looking for the perfect outfit, taking an average of 7,305 steps.
‘You can burn up to 130 calories an hour on a shopping trip. All that contorting and pulling items on and off is good for stretching muscles and increasing blood flow, too.’
COOKING DINNER
Chop root vegetables with a bit of enthusiasm, use a pestle and mortar to crush spices rather than an electric grinder, and do the washing-up yourself rather than languidly stacking the dishwasher. It all adds up to a very respectable 150-plus calories an hour.
‘Rustling up your favorite meal not only gives your arms a big workout with all the lifting of heavy pans, chopping and stirring, but also encourages you to make things from scratch rather than ordering an unhealthy takeaway.’
A SUPERMARKET DASH
Just doing the weekly shop can burn calories faster than Jessica Ennis-Hill can say ‘heptathlon’.
As your trolley fills up, you’re effectively doing resistance training, firming up arms, legs and torso. Piling your trolley with heavy items first - tins, bottles and potatoes - intensifies the workout.
A LONG, HOT BATH
A Loughborough University study revealed that a steamy bath of 40c can melt away 140 calories (that’s a significant 7 percent of a daily allowance of 2,000), and that sitting in one for an hour causes an 80 percent increase in energy expenditure, lowering blood glucose levels as a result.
HAVING A GOOD LAUGH
Research from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, published in the International Journal of Obesity, found that just 15 minutes of good, hard laughing a day will burn up to 40 calories - enough to drop 4 lb of excess weight a year.
‘Laughing is the perfect way to give your abdominal muscles a real work out, second only to an intense session of crunches. It’s a brilliant way to relieve physical tension and stress, too, leaving you relaxed for up to 45 minutes.’
