    我們今天要講由neck這個(gè)詞組成的習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)。大家也許已經(jīng)知道neck是脖子。我們要學(xué)的第一個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)是: pain in the neck。 Pain是疼痛的意思。Pain in the neck，一聽(tīng)就知道是"脖子疼"，但是它的比喻意義是什么呢? 脖子也許是身體上活動(dòng)最多的部位。我們時(shí)常必須轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)脖子，所以要是脖子疼而不能動(dòng)，可想而知會(huì)給人帶來(lái)多大的不便和麻煩，令人不勝其煩。好，我們從一個(gè)例子來(lái)琢磨pain in the neck究竟含義是什么。這個(gè)人在說(shuō)他的近鄰：

    例句-1：Listening to that guy in the apartment next door play his stereo as loud as he can every night until two am is getting to be a pain in the neck for my wife and me.

    原來(lái)隔壁那位老兄每天晚上都把他的立體聲收錄機(jī)開(kāi)到最大音量直到凌晨?jī)牲c(diǎn)才停，可想而知住在他的近邊聽(tīng)這噪音該有多煩人。

    所以pain in the neck用來(lái)指令人討厭的人或事。

    Pain in the neck一般是說(shuō)較為瑣碎的煩擾。我們?cè)賮?lái)聽(tīng)個(gè)通常發(fā)生在電影院里的例子:

    例句-2：Different things annoy different people. To me, for example, the worst pain in the neck is somebody who sits behind me in a movie theater and talks to his friends all the time the picture is on.

    他說(shuō)：困擾因人而異。例如對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)，最令人生厭的事兒就是在電影開(kāi)演的時(shí)候坐在我后面的人跟他同伴老聊個(gè)沒(méi)完。

    這兒the worst pain in the neck是最令人生厭的事。

    我們?cè)賹W(xué)個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ): break one's neck。Break在這兒意思是"折斷"。Break one's neck是夸張的說(shuō)法，出處可能是成年累月地埋頭苦干，幾乎累斷了脖子。這句話相當(dāng)于中文說(shuō)的: 累斷了腰干?？傊际侵附弑M全力地苦干。我們來(lái)聽(tīng)聽(tīng)一個(gè)父親怎么責(zé)罵他那些不爭(zhēng)氣的孩子:

    例句-3：I broke my neck trying to raise you kids and look at the way you pay me back! One son in jail， the other too lazy to work and my daughter ran away with her hairdresser.

    他說(shuō)：為了把你們撫養(yǎng)成人我累斷了腰干，看看你們是怎么報(bào)答我的? 一個(gè)兒子坐牢，另一個(gè)偷懶不做工，女兒竟然跟理發(fā)師私奔。

    這里broke my neck意思是我拼命苦干。

    我們?cè)賹W(xué)一個(gè)和break one's neck似乎相象的習(xí)慣用語(yǔ): wring one's neck。Wring意思是"使勁擰"。Wring one's neck可能來(lái)自殺雞的一種辦法: 把雞脖子擰斷，雞就喪命了。Wring one's neck直譯是擰斷某人的脖子，就是殺了某人。當(dāng)然這只是一句威脅。我們來(lái)聽(tīng)個(gè)例子。這是父親在嚴(yán)厲警告兒子:

    例句-4：If I catch you one more time sneaking in and drinking my whiskey, I promise you I'll wring your neck. I don't want to see you even looking at a bottle till you reach 21.

    那位父親說(shuō)：要是我再看到你溜進(jìn)來(lái)偷偷喝我的威士忌的話，我可饒不了你!在。你沒(méi)到二十一歲前我連酒瓶子都不準(zhǔn)你看一下。

    這里的I'll wring your neck意思是"看我不擰斷你的脖子"，其實(shí)是說(shuō)要重重處罰你。

    我們?cè)俾?tīng)個(gè)例子，說(shuō)的是一個(gè)倒霉的老師。

    例句-5：I feel sorry for Miss Jones who teaches that second grade class. She has such noisy, unruly kids that she must feel like wringing their necks every day.

    他說(shuō)：我可真同情教兩年級(jí)那個(gè)班的Jones小姐。她那些孩子這樣吵吵鬧鬧、無(wú)法無(wú)天，我想她每天簡(jiǎn)直都恨不得掐斷他們的脖子。

    當(dāng)然這里的wringing their necks也是夸張，絕不真會(huì)出手傷人。
