[00:00.00]Lesson 23

[00:02.51]TWO FRIENDS AND THE BEAR

[00:06.45]Two friends were travelling together through a forest. One of them said:"If we meet any wild beasts,I’ll help you and you’ll help me."

[00:18.81]"That’s fine,"said his friend,and they walked on.

[00:23.90]Suddenly a big bear ran our from behind a tree. The man who said he would help his friend at once got up a tree and hid himself among the leaves.

[00:36.65]The other man could not climb trees. So he threw himself on the ground, closed his eyes and pretended to be dead.

[00:47.33]The bear came up and sniffed at the man’s head.It put its nose close to his mouth and ears.

[00:55.77]The man held his breath. The bear thought he was dead and walked away, for bears never touch dead men.

[01:04.63]When the bear was gone, and all was safe, the man in the tree came down.

[01:10.64]With a smile,he asked his friend:"What did the bear tell you when he put his nose so close to your ears?"

[01:18.08]"Well,"said his friend,"the bear said:’Don’t trust those who leave their friends the moment they get into difficulty!’"

[02:15.76]"Go,"Aesop answered."I know I must go,"said the traveller,"But I want to know how soon I can get to town."

[02:25.66]"Go,"Aesop shouted to him.The traveller was very angry,"This man must be mad,"he thought. And he walked away.

[02:37.00]Suddenly he heard Aesop shouting to him."You will go to town in two hours."

[02:44.70]The traveller was greatly surprised. He turned back and asked,"Why didn’t you tell me that before?"

[02:52.67]"How could I have told you that before?"answered Aesop."I didn’t know how fast you could walk."
