The Director went suddenly pale, stopped strugglingand stood, his hands on her wrists, staring down ather, horrified.

主任的臉色突然蒼白了，停止了掙扎，站在那兒，雙手握住琳妲的手腕，低頭盯視著她，嚇壞了。

Yes, a baby–and I was its mother.

的確，懷了個(gè)孩子——而我就是他的母親。

She flung the obscenity like a challenge into theoutraged silence; then, suddenly breaking awayfrom him, ashamed, ashamed, covered her face with her hands, sobbing.

她把這個(gè)猥褻的詞扔向了受到侮辱的寂靜，仿佛是在挑戰(zhàn)。然后她離開了主任，感到了羞恥，羞恥，用雙手掩住了面孔，抽泣起來(lái)。

Turning towards the door, "John!" she called. "John!"

她轉(zhuǎn)身向著門口，“約翰!”她叫道，“約翰!”

He came in at once, paused for a moment just inside the door, looked round, then soft on hismoccasined feet strode quickly across the room, fell on his knees in front of the Director, andsaid in a clear voice: "My father!"

約翰應(yīng)聲走了進(jìn)來(lái)，在門口先停了一會(huì)，四面望了望，然后，他那穿鹿皮靴的腳一聲不響地迅速穿過(guò)了房間，雙膝落地，跪到了主任面前，清脆地叫了一聲：“爸爸!”

The word (for "father" was not so much obscene as–with its connotation of something at oneremove from the loathsomeness and moral obliquity of child-bearing—merely gross, ascatological rather than a pornographic impropriety); the comically smutty word relievedwhat had become a quite intolerable tension.

那個(gè)字，那個(gè)猥褻得可笑的字，破除了十分難堪的緊張，因?yàn)閺?ldquo;爸爸”引起的聯(lián)想畢竟跟生育的可憎和道德的邪惡隔了一層;這個(gè)字不文明，卻只是骯臟而不涉淫穢。這個(gè)可笑的骯臟字眼緩和了難以忍受的緊張氣氛。

Laughter broke out, enormous, almost hysterical, peal after peal, as though it would neverstop.

笑聲爆發(fā)了出來(lái)，是哄堂大笑，幾乎是歇斯底里的笑。笑聲一陣接著一陣，仿佛不會(huì)停止。

My father—and it was the Director! My father! Oh Ford, oh Ford!

我的爸爸——而那爸爸卻是主任!我的爸爸!啊，福帝!啊，福帝!

That was really too good.

太精彩了，的確!

The whooping and the roaring renewed themselves, faces seemed on the point ofdisintegration, tears were streaming.

哄笑和吼叫重新發(fā)出，臉都幾乎笑破了，笑得眼淚汪汪。

Six more test-tubes of spermatozoa were upset. My father!

又有六支精子管打翻了。我的爸爸!

Pale, wild-eyed, the Director glared about him in an agony of bewildered humiliation.

主任蒼白了臉，用瘋狂的目光四面望著，他羞愧得手足無(wú)措，非常痛苦。

My father!

我的爸爸!

The laughter, which had shown signs of dying away, broke out again more loudly than ever.

已出現(xiàn)平靜跡象的笑聲又爆發(fā)了出來(lái)，比以前更響了。

He put his hands over his ears and rushed out of the room.

主任用雙手捂住耳朵沖出了房間。
