Louis was right. Serena, the swan of his desiring, hadbeen caught by the fierce storm and blown all theway across America.

路易斯是對(duì)的。塞蕾娜，他思慕的這只天鵝，不幸被猛烈的風(fēng)暴卷住，一直吹到了美國(guó)的這個(gè)地方。

When she looked down and saw Bird Lake, she endedher flight, almost dead from exhaustion.

當(dāng)她從空中瞥見(jiàn)鳥(niǎo)湖時(shí)，已經(jīng)再也沒(méi)力氣飛了，差點(diǎn)因力竭而死掉。

Louis was tempted to rush right over.

路易斯忍不住要立刻沖過(guò)去。

But then he thought, "No, that would be a mistake.

可他轉(zhuǎn)念又想，“不，那會(huì)是一個(gè)錯(cuò)誤的。

She is in no condition at the moment to perceive the depth of my affection and the extent ofmy love.

在這種情況下她覺(jué)不出我對(duì)她的愛(ài)有多深。

She is too pooped. I will wait. I will bide my time. I will give her a chance to recover.

她太累了。我要等等再說(shuō)。我要靜候良機(jī)。我要給她一段恢復(fù)的時(shí)間。

Then I will renew our acquaintance and make myself known."

然后我將重建我們的關(guān)系，對(duì)她進(jìn)行自我介紹。”

Louis did not go to his job that night; the weather was too bad.

路易斯那天晚上沒(méi)去工作;天氣實(shí)在太壞了。

All night, he stayed awake, keeping watch, at a slight distance from his beloved.

When morning came, the wind subsided. The skies cleared. The lake grew calm. The storm wasover.

Serena stirred and woke. She was still exhausted, and very mussy.

Louis stayed away from her. "I'll just wait," he thought.

路易斯離開(kāi)了她。“我只有等下去，”他想。

"When in love, one must take risks.

But I'm not going to risk everything with a bird who is too tired to see straight. I won't hurry,and I won't worry.

可我不能為一只累得什么都看不清的鳥(niǎo)兒冒什么險(xiǎn)呀。我不急，我不著急。

Back home on Upper Red Rock Lake, I was without a voice; she ignored me because I could nottell her of my love.

在上紅石湖是老家那會(huì)兒，我是沒(méi)有嗓子的;她不理我是因?yàn)槲也荒軐?duì)她說(shuō)出我的愛(ài)。

Now, thanks to my brave father, I have my trumpet.

現(xiàn)在，多謝我那勇敢的父親，我有了我的小號(hào)了。

Through the power of music, I will impress her with the intensity of my desire and thestrength of my devotion.

靠著音樂(lè)的力量，我能對(duì)她表達(dá)出我愛(ài)欲的激情和濃烈程度。

She will hear me say ko-hoh. I'll tell her I love her in a language anybody can understand, thelanguage of music.

她將會(huì)聽(tīng)到我說(shuō)‘吭—嗬’的。我要用音樂(lè)語(yǔ)言，一種任何人都能聽(tīng)懂的語(yǔ)言告訴她我愛(ài)她。

She will hear the trumpet of the swan, and she will be mine. At least, I hope she will."

Usually, if a strange bird appeared on Bird Lake,

通常，如果鳥(niǎo)湖上來(lái)了一只陌生的鳥(niǎo)兒，

one of the keepers would report its arrival to the Head Man in Charge of Birds, whose office wasin the Bird House.

其中的一個(gè)管理員就會(huì)向鳥(niǎo)類(lèi)管理負(fù)責(zé)人匯報(bào)，他的辦公室就設(shè)在鳥(niǎo)屋里。

The Head Man would then give the order to have the new bird pinioned--have one of its wingsclipped.

這個(gè)負(fù)責(zé)人接著就會(huì)下令給新來(lái)的鳥(niǎo)兒“打尖”——剪掉它的一只翅膀尖。

But today, the keeper who usually tended the waterfowl was sick with the flu and had not cometo work.

可今天，那個(gè)平時(shí)負(fù)責(zé)照看水禽的管理員恰巧得了流感，沒(méi)來(lái)上班。

Nobody noticed that a new Trumpeter Swan had arrived.

沒(méi)有人注意到這里新來(lái)了一只號(hào)手天鵝。

Serena was being very quiet, anyway--she was not attracting any attention.

而且，塞蕾娜表現(xiàn)得又很安靜——因此她沒(méi)有引起任何人的注意。

There were now five Trumpeters on the lake.

現(xiàn)在湖上有五只號(hào)手天鵝了。

There were the original three captive swans, Curiosity, Felicity, and Apathy. There was, ofcourse, Louis.

原來(lái)這里只有三只被囚禁的天鵝，好奇，快活和冷淡。當(dāng)然還有路易斯

And now there was the new arrival, Serena, still exhausted but beginning to revive.

現(xiàn)在這兒新來(lái)了一只天鵝，塞蕾娜，她雖然仍是渾身乏力，可身體卻在漸漸地康復(fù)。
