There was a scientist, an inventor of plastics, who received permission from the personnel department of his laboratory to invent a permeable plastic.

有一個(gè)專(zhuān)搞塑料發(fā)明的科學(xué)家得到其實(shí)驗(yàn)室的人事部門(mén)的許可，力圖發(fā)明一種有滲透性的塑料。

He persevered in his efforts day after day. It was his personality to persist, you see.

他日復(fù)一日不屈不撓地做這項(xiàng)工作。從這一點(diǎn)可以看出，他性格中最大的特點(diǎn)就是堅(jiān)持不懈。

Careful to avoid pernicious odors, he examined the perplexing problem of the perpendicular molecular crystal structures, and after much perseverance, persistence, and perspiration, finally produced a plastic that he called the Perpetual Plastic.

研究過(guò)程中，他必須小心翼翼地避免有害氣體，還要仔細(xì)觀(guān)察一個(gè)令人困惑的問(wèn)題——垂直分子晶體的構(gòu)成。經(jīng)過(guò)一段時(shí)間堅(jiān)定不移的持續(xù)努力，付出了無(wú)數(shù)汗水之后，他最終生產(chǎn)出一種他稱(chēng)之為永久塑料的東西。

He named it this because of its permanent qualities.

他把這種塑料命名為永久塑料是因?yàn)槠鋬?yōu)良品質(zhì)能長(zhǎng)久保存。

One day, the scientist was called to a court of law to face charges of patent violation.

一天，這位科學(xué)家被傳出席法庭，因?yàn)橛腥丝馗嫠`反了專(zhuān)利法。

In the court room, the judge questioned the scientist saying,

法庭里，法官詢(xún)問(wèn)這位科學(xué)家：

Under the threat of perjury, I ask you whether you have perpetrated the crime of fraud.

我問(wèn)你的話(huà)你必須如實(shí)回答，不能發(fā)假誓。我問(wèn)你是否犯了欺詐罪？

The scientist perspired under pressure and gave a persuasive argument saying,

由于壓力很大，科學(xué)家渾身都出汗了，但他仍頗具說(shuō)服力地說(shuō)道：

If it is permissible by the court, I would like to explain my perspective on this matter.

如果法庭允許，我將解釋我對(duì)這件事的觀(guān)點(diǎn)。

My invention is truly perpetual because of its permanent qualities.

我發(fā)明的塑料絕對(duì)是永久性的，因?yàn)樗钠焚|(zhì)是永恒不變的。

It is permanent because common substances like air and water can permeate, but only very slowly.

雖然空氣和水之類(lèi)的物質(zhì)可以透過(guò)，但其滲透過(guò)程非常緩慢，

Therefore, this plastic can perpetuate the preservation of perishable items such as food.

因此，這種塑料就可以永遠(yuǎn)保存諸如食物之類(lèi)的易腐物質(zhì)。

The judge, though somewhat perplexed, expressed a permissive attitude and said, You have persuaded me.

盡管法官有些迷惑，但還是流露出一種寬容的態(tài)度，他說(shuō)：你已經(jīng)說(shuō)服我了。

The scientist was acquitted of the charges. Now his invention is popularly being used for containers of food products around the world.
