While I was observing this phenomenal creature, two jets of steam and water sprang from its blowholes and rose to an altitude of forty meters,

當(dāng)我觀察這只奇怪動(dòng)物的時(shí)候，兩道水和汽從它的鼻孔吐出來，直噴到叫十米的高度，

which settled for me its mode of breathing.

這一點(diǎn)使我肯定了它呼吸的方式。

From this I finally concluded that it belonged to the branch Vertebrata, class Mammalia, subclass Monodelphia, group Pisciforma, order Cetacea, family...

我最后斷定這動(dòng)物是屬于脊推動(dòng)物門，哺乳綱，唯一豚魚亞綱，魚類，鯨魚目屬。

but here I couldn't make up my mind. The order Cetacea consists of three families,baleen whales, sperm whales, dolphins, and it's in this last group that narwhales are placed.

到這里我便不能往下說了。鯨魚目有三科：長(zhǎng)須鯨，大頭鯨和海豚，獨(dú)角鯨是歸在最后一科。

Each of these families is divided into several genera, each genus into species, each species into varieties.

每一科分為好些屬，屬分為種，種分為變種。

So I was still missing variety, species, genus, and family, but no doubt I would complete my classifying with the aid of Heaven and Commander Farragut.

變種、種、屬、科，我還不知道，但我不懷疑，借上帝和法拉古艦長(zhǎng)的幫助，我可以完成對(duì)于這動(dòng)物的分類。
